{"id":1101,"date":"2026-09-03T10:35:33","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T10:35:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webmediamall.com\/index.php\/2026\/09\/03\/unicorn778-mexico-brazil-oil-deal-raises-concern-for-ecosystems-and-energy-transition-peluang-terburuk-saat-bermain-slot-online\/"},"modified":"2026-09-03T10:35:33","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T10:35:33","slug":"unicorn778-mexico-brazil-oil-deal-raises-concern-for-ecosystems-and-energy-transition-peluang-terburuk-saat-bermain-slot-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webmediamall.com\/index.php\/2026\/09\/03\/unicorn778-mexico-brazil-oil-deal-raises-concern-for-ecosystems-and-energy-transition-peluang-terburuk-saat-bermain-slot-online\/","title":{"rendered":"UNICORN778 Mexico-Brazil oil deal raises concern for ecosystems and energy transition Peluang Terburuk Saat Bermain Slot Online"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"post-328312\">&#13;<\/p>\n<div class=\"bulletpoints-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"bulletpoints\">\n<ul>\n<li><em>This June, Pemex and Petrobras, the state fossil fuel companies of Mexico and Brazil respectively, announced a two-year partnership to jointly explore mature and deepwater oilfields in the Gulf of Mexico.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Details of the exact arrangement have not been released, despite both companies being state-run and campaigners\u2019 calls for greater transparency, but subsequent reports suggest that exploration could focus on the Bay of Campeche, near the Gulf\u2019s largest marine protected area and several vulnerable reef habitats.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Both companies have downplayed the significance of the deal as a preliminary step, but environmental campaigners said it risks tying both nations to decades of fossil fuel emissions and pollution.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Supporters hope the partnership will help staunch a recent run of safety incidents at Mexican petrochemical sites.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><button class=\"content-expander\"><span>See All Key Ideas<\/span><\/button><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Environmental organizations have raised concerns that a recent partnership between the state petrochemical companies of Brazil and Mexico will commit both nations to decades of fossil fuel production, increase the risk of oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico, and displace coastal communities with industrial expansion.<\/p>\n<p>On June 23, Brazil\u2019s Petrobras and Mexico\u2019s Pemex announced a two-year <a href=\"https:\/\/agencia.petrobras.com.br\/w\/negocio\/petrobras-e-pemex-firmam-parceria-para-coopera\u00e7\u00e3o-em-explora\u00e7\u00e3o-e-produ\u00e7\u00e3o-e-processos-industriais\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">memorandum of understanding<\/a> (MoU) outlining their collaboration. The document itself was not published, but in a short press release, the companies describe cooperating to \u201cincrease production in deepwater\u201d and \u201cmature fields \u2026 in the Gulf of Mexico\u201d. The agreement also refers to ancillary fossil fuel products such as fertilizers, biofuels and carbon capture, according to the release.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/international\/analysis\/country\/mex\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">extracts the majority of its fossil fuels from the southern Gulf of Mexico<\/a>, but has seen production declining in recent decades. Although the partnership is aimed to increase the country\u2019s energy sovereignty, energy researchers and environmentalists say questions remain about the terms of the deal and its repercussions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an effort from the Mexican administration to increase oil barrels, but at what cost,\u201d Renata Terrazas, vice president, Mexico, of marine environmental group Oceana, said to Mongabay over video call. \u201cRight now we\u2019re just guessing. There\u2019s no transparency about what this actually means, and that\u2019s one of the things that we fear the most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The partnership comes after Pemex suffered two major safety incidents this spring. In February, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/months-after-pemex-gas-well-accident-mexico-health-pollution-concerns-grow-2026-07-31\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">an exploratory natural gas well near Las Choapas, Veracruz, exploded<\/a> and continued to release smoke and gas for nearly five months. In March, an <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/04\/oil-spill-continues-in-gulf-of-mexico-vulnerable-habitats-while-pemex-admits-fault\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">oil spill near the Gulf of Mexico<\/a> contaminated 933 kilometers (580 miles) of shoreline. (CC BY-SA 4.0).<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Leonardo Beltran Rodriguez is an energy researcher and consultant who served in the Mexican government\u2019s energy department as energy secretary and was previously a Pemex board member. \u201cSafety is one of the things Pemex has not been very good at [\u2026] So if they can learn or at least observe [Petrobras\u2019] practice I think that would be fantastic,\u201d Beltran told Mongabay over video call. \u201cBut if you ask me, should they be more public about the partnership? Absolutely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because Petrobras is publicly listed and Pemex trades its debt internationally, both companies are subject to financial transparency regulations, including those set by the New York Stock Exchange and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually we\u2019ll know a little bit more. But it\u2019s incredible that\u2019s only because they have the obligation elsewhere, not domestically,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Terrezas shared Beltran\u2019s optimism that the MoU could improve Pemex\u2019s safety record, but said that the few terms included in the agreement suggest it may push both companies towards riskier developments. \u201cMature wells are in shallow waters which are very close to the coastline\u201d, which increases the chances that a spill reaches waterfront habitats, she said. \u201cAnd more accidents happen in deep waters because it\u2019s more difficult to control what\u2019s going on there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Researchers\u2019 analysis of past drilling in the Gulf of Mexico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S030142151201141X\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">found<\/a> that safety and environmental incidents increase by an average of 8.5% for every 30.48 meters or 100 feet of well depth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the whole MoU is working to plug the [safety] gaps at Pemex, that would be interesting,\u201d Terrezas added, but would also raise the question of what Petrobras expects in return for sharing its learnings. \u201cRight now we\u2019re just guessing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Beltran, the likely tradeoff was more obvious, \u201cThere\u2019s an opportunity for Petrobras to develop an offshore block of the Gulf of Mexico, and that would be a great opportunity for Petrobras or for any other company to be a part of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That possibility undermines the Mexican government\u2019s argument that the MoU will increase the country\u2019s energy independence, according to Nancy Viridiana L\u00e1zaro Lembrino, senior oceans campaigner at Greenpeace Mexico. \u201cThe whole narrative is about energy sovereignty, but the reality is totally different,\u201d she told Mongabay in a video interview. \u201cIt\u2019s sacrificing the environment and the well-being of people for nothing.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_299938\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-299938 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2025\/05\/30114737\/Image_2-1-1200x800.jpg\" alt=\"Coral reef in Mexico. Image courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/philip.hamilton.photography\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">Philip Hamilton\/Ocean Image Bank<\/a>.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The MoU will begin by exploring a particularly deep area in the south of the Gulf, off Campeche, <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/energy\/articles\/oil-giants-eye-jurassic-rocks-120000349.html?guccounter=1\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">Bloomberg reported<\/a> in August, although an exact location was not confirmed. <a href=\"https:\/\/oceana.org\/victories\/mexico-creates-southern-gulf-of-mexico-reefs-national-park-largest-protected-area-in-the-gulf-of-mexico\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">In 2024, Mexico created the Southern Gulf of Mexico Reefs National Park<\/a>, the largest marine protected area (MPA) in the Gulf of Mexico. The MPA was designed to function as a marine wildlife corridor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0964569113002342\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">connecting a sweep of coral reefs home to more than 3,000 species<\/a>. Scientists have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/marine-science\/articles\/10.3389\/fmars.2022.835789\/full\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">described<\/a> a particular cluster of cold-water reefs, the Campeche Bank, as an \u201cimportant stepping stone in the regional connectivity\u201d of coral species.<\/p>\n<p>Offshore drilling is banned within the park, but deepwater drilling nearby could expose the reef habitats to \u201cdisastrous\u201d pollution in the case of a spill, Terrezas said. Many of Mexico\u2019s existing oil platforms are clustered in Campeche Bay, but in shallower waters.<\/p>\n<p>Pemex and the Mexican government\u2019s energy department did not respond to Mongabay\u2019s requests for comment. On the morning following the announcement, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum downplayed the significance of the partnership and dedicated her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gob.mx\/presidencia\/es\/articulos\/version-estenografica-conferencia-de-prensa-de-la-presidenta-claudia-sheinbaum-pardo-del-24-de-junio-de-2026?idiom=es\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">daily press conference<\/a> to the theme of renewable energy investment to increase energy sovereignty in Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about the deal, she suggested that the companies might \u201cjointly develop some parts of the Gulf\u201d and that Pemex would share its expertize in fertilizer production in return for Petrobras\u2019 oil exploration knowledge. \u201cWe\u2019re not going to sign a contract which means losing control of Pemex,\u201d she added, stressing that Petrobras was not a private company, and that the two nations share a political affinity due to their nominally progressive ruling parties.<\/p>\n<p>The press conference was dedicated to what Sheinbaum said was the \u201chistoric, unique, huge effort\u201d to produce 38% Mexico\u2019s energy from renewable sources by 2030. Any new oil wells drilled in the Gulf of Mexico are not expected to begin production before then.<\/p>\n<p>At first, a spokesperson for Petrobras told Mongabay they were unavailable to be interviewed but could answer written questions. They then declined to answer those questions, because \u201cdiscussions regarding the memorandum of understanding signed with Pemex are ongoing,\u201d and \u201cthe company does not comment on negotiations currently in progress\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny updates will be communicated to the market and the public in due course,\u201d they added in an emailed statement. \u201cPetrobras further reaffirms its commitment to transparency, in compliance with disclosure regulations.<\/p>\n<p>For Greenpeace\u2019s L\u00e1zaro Lembrino, the agreement marks only the latest move towards extractivism from a president who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/future\/article\/20240607-claudia-sheinbaum-mexicos-new-climate-minded-president\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">once coauthored reports for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as a climate scientist<\/a> \u2014 and made her environmental credentials a not insignificant part of her 2024 campaign for office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe lost the environmental cause so long ago,\u201d said L\u00e1zaro Lembrino. In the months following the MoU, Sheinbaum\u2019s government has also reopened Mexico to fracking development, <a href=\"https:\/\/es.mongabay.com\/2026\/07\/fracking-mexico-estudio-impactos-agua-personas\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">despite environmental concerns<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely tiring pushing back,\u201d she added. \u201cA lot of people are being affected by energy policy right now, but they\u2019re not taking the science into account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Banner image<\/strong>: The Olmeca oil refinery stands at the Dos Bocas port in Paraiso, Tabasco state, Mexico.
