Peluang Terburuk Saat Bermain Slot Online"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"post-328961\">&#13;<\/p>\n<div class=\"bulletpoints-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"bulletpoints\">\n<ul>\n<li><em>The sheer numbers and vast array of Latin American wildlife species offered for sale in one of Southeast Asia\u2019s largest wildlife markets, in Thailand, has been steadily rising over the past two years, observers say, alongside animals from across the globe.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The trend points to a broader shift in the global wildlife trade, with more species coming out of the imperiled Amazon and many of them sold as pets.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Trafficked animals are often laundered from other South American countries through Peru, where regulations make it easier to export species abroad.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Many of these species are threatened, plucked from the wild, and then face abhorrent conditions during the journey from the Amazon to Asia, raising further animal welfare concerns; many perish during transit.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><button class=\"content-expander\"><span>See All Key Ideas<\/span><\/button><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>BANGKOK, Thailand \u2014 In the narrow alleys of Bangkok\u2019s Chatuchak Market, the world\u2019s wildlife is for sale.<\/p>\n<p>Ensnared in jungles, fished out of rivers and plucked from wetlands across the globe, hundreds of exotic species are packed onto transcontinental flights only to end up on display in what experts say ranks as one of the largest wildlife markets on Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Here, alongside Thai milk tea vendors and mango sticky rice stalls, visitors need only veer a few steps from the tourist path to end up in the market\u2019s \u201cPets\u201d zone \u2014 an arguably liberal use of the term. This section of the market hosts a menagerie of domestic and wild animals alike, often crammed into cages with little water and no respite from temperatures that soar beyond 32\u00b0 Celsius (90\u00b0 Fahrenheit).<\/p>\n<p>From Africa, there are spurred tortoises, fennec foxes, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2025\/09\/drc-finally-moves-to-protect-african-gray-parrots-from-unsustainable-trade-didier-makal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">gray parrots<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/02\/big-cats-get-the-press-but-small-wildcats-are-being-poached-and-trafficked-in-silence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">serval cats<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2020\/05\/prized-as-pets-are-ball-pythons-being-traded-out-of-wild-existence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">ball pythons<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2017\/02\/this-new-primate-is-a-giant-among-tiny-bushbabies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Giant bush babies<\/a> retail for 48,000 baht (about $1,450), with signs advertising the nocturnal African primates as \u201cnewly arrived.\u201d Miniscule meerkats dressed in tutus, sometimes presented in petting zoo sandboxes, are among the most plentiful animals at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chatuchakmarket.org\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">Chatuchak<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Masked palm civets, sugar gliders, squirrels, rainbow lorikeets, and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2021\/01\/current-protected-areas-not-enough-to-save-parrots-from-extinction-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">eclectus parrots<\/a> are on offer from Asia and Oceania. Image by Gloria Dickie.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To Scott Roberton, who leads the nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcs.org\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">Wildlife Conservation Society\u2019s<\/a> countertrafficking program, the most shocking development is the sheer glut of South American species now filling the market\u2019s shelves.<\/p>\n<p>Every few weeks, the Bangkok-based Roberton visits Chatuchak to take stock of what\u2019s for sale. Coming here often, he says, allows him to spot emerging trends in the global wildlife trade.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, he\u2019s witnessed an alarming increase in South American species \u2014 particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2016\/02\/the-dangers-of-chinas-thumb-monkey-trend\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">marmosets<\/a> and other primates \u2014 showing up in the Thai market. \u201cIt\u2019s changed a lot in the past two years. The volume is greater. The diversity of species is greater,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Roberton weaves through the maze of alleys, past freshwater matamata turtles from the Amazon Basin and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2022\/05\/a-helping-hand-for-red-footed-tortoises-making-a-comeback-in-argentina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Chaco tortoises<\/a> from Patagonia. Blue and scarlet <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2015\/12\/bolivias-domestic-parrot-trade-supplied-by-birds-seen-as-crop-pests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">macaws<\/a> squawk from small wire cages. Tiny capuchin monkeys, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/06\/the-global-trafficking-ring-preying-on-a-rare-golden-monkey-from-brazil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">tamarins<\/a>, and marmosets shrink in their enclosures alongside coatis, capybaras, and maras \u2014 rabbit-like animals from Argentina.<\/p>\n<p>The fish section is especially prolific, with redtail catfish, zebra pleco \u2014 endemic to a small section of Brazil\u2019s Xingu River \u2014 and stingrays stuffed into plastic bags, tubs, and tanks, lined up on the public-facing sidewalk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time we come, there is a new species here,\u201d Roberton says with a mix of dismay and frustration. And even if sale of a species is legal, that doesn\u2019t mean it isn\u2019t still threatened with extinction.<\/p>\n<p>During <a href=\"https:\/\/www.traffic.org\/news\/persistent-illegal-bird-trade-highlighted-at-notorious-bangkok-market\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">a 2015 survey<\/a> of bird species at Chatuchak, for example, the investigative wildlife trade watchdog TRAFFIC counted 17 species listed as threatened or near threatened under the IUCN Red List \u2014 more than half of which were native to Thailand. The birds were considered wild-caught and therefore protected by national legislation that prohibits their capture and trade.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to national laws, a global treaty, the <a href=\"https:\/\/checklist.cites.org\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES)<\/a>, regulates cross-border wildlife trade. CITES lists species under three appendices: those threatened with extinction, for which commercial international trade is generally prohibited; species that could become threatened without trade controls; and species that are protected by a particular country that has asked others to help control commercial trade.<\/p>\n<p>Many <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/series\/latin-american-wildlife-trade\/?_ga=2.111309633.413912381.1787204941-1187516819.1787204941\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Latin American species<\/a> found in Chatukchak, experts tell Mongabay, may be protected from export in their native countries, yet ultimately end up with paperwork that appears to confirm their legal status when crossing into Southeast Asia. That\u2019s because somewhere along the trade route, they\u2019ve been laundered into the legal supply chain with fraudulent permits. Image by Gloria Dickie.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Chatuchak, which likely ranks only behind Jakarta\u2019s wildlife markets in scale, has long attracted international criticism for both its treatment of animals and for biosecurity risks, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic. Many domestic animals \u2014 kittens and puppies \u2014 are kept in close quarters with exotic species and are often situated near food stalls. Zoonotic diseases, including avian influenza and coronaviruses, could spread from animals to humans due to the close contact, high animal density, and unsanitary conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Objections to the market reached a crescendo in 2024 after an electrical fire broke out in the pet zone, burning more than 1,000 animals alive. Many people hoped the fire would finally shutter the wildlife market, but vendors swiftly returned \u2014 with support from city officials. In the aftermath, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationthailand.com\/news\/general\/40038710\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">local media reported<\/a> that Bangkok\u2019s governor encouraged people to purchase pets at the market to help retailers. Image by Gloria Dickie.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>The rainforest hub<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The story playing out in the scorching alleys of Chatuchak begins more than 10,000 miles away, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2022\/10\/a-fast-growing-pipeline-the-amazon-to-southeast-asia-wildlife-trade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">city of Iquitos<\/a>, deep within the Peruvian Amazon. It has long been a major hub of the illegal wildlife trade, benefitting from the sheer diversity in the jungle just beyond its edges.<\/p>\n<p>The bounty of the world\u2019s largest tropical rainforest is easily smuggled by boat into the sprawling city that lies at the confluence of the Amazon, Nanay and Itaya <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2024\/12\/perus-modern-history-of-migration-and-settlement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">rivers<\/a>. From there, it can be ferried onward to the capital, Lima, on one of several daily commercial flights, connecting the remote river town with buyers around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The Amazon is home to about a quarter of the planet\u2019s terrestrial plant and animal species \u2014 and more fish than any other river system. Though more than 12,000 Amazonian species are protected under CITES, that hasn\u2019t managed to stem the outward flow of the jungle\u2019s most coveted species. Today, routes out of the Amazon are well trodden for wildlife as well as other criminal cargo.<\/p>\n<p>The massive trade in elephant ivory and rhino horn has garnered much global attention since the trade reached crisis proportions in the late 2000s. But wildlife trafficking from Latin America has often been overlooked, experts say.<\/p>\n<p>This has helped the illegal trade to flourish in the region. Unlike the high-value wildlife products coming out of Africa, however, this trade is more varied and focuses on live animals for the global pet trade. Image by Gloria Dickie.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIquitos is a city where a lot of illegal commodities move freely within the Amazon,\u201d says Renata Cao, the Latin America project lead at TRAFFIC. \u201cA lot of products from different countries get to Iquitos, and then in Peru it\u2019s easier to launder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peruvian law recognizes two legitimate sources of wildlife that can be sold internationally: Animals can be legally taken from authorized \u201cwildlife management areas,\u201d which are protected areas that sometimes allow for sustainable management quotas, and from captive-breeding facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Export require documents that establish legal origin, but this trade opens the door to <a href=\"https:\/\/mag.wcoomd.org\/magazine\/wco-news-78\/illegal-wildlife-trade-an-outline-of-the-problems-facing-peru\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">corruption and illegal trafficking<\/a>: false permits, incorrect species classifications and poached animals laundered within legally exported species.<\/p>\n<p>Protected species from Colombia, for example, can \u201cgo across the border and then they get laundered <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2014\/09\/conservationists-use-social-media-to-take-on-perus-booming-illegal-wildlife-trade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">in Peru<\/a> and exported with fake papers that say they were captive bred, but they were really caught in the wild in other countries,\u201d Cao explains.<\/p>\n<p>More than half of the Amazon falls within Brazil, the rest spilling over into Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Venezuela, French Guiana, Suriname and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/list\/peru\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Peru<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Amazon is a very vast region and it\u2019s full of rivers,\u201d says Roberto Vieto, animal welfare adviser at the nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;q=World+Animal+Protection&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">World Animal Protection<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He describes the process: After nabbing an animal from the wild, \u201cfrom a community, you take a boat and you can smuggle whatever you want and get into the city.\u201d It\u2019s difficult to set up adequate checkpoints and trade controls along rivers, he adds. \u201cThat\u2019s why Brazil, Colombia and Peru need to make coordinated efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_328983\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/09\/07113633\/10.-IMG_0185.jpg\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-328983\" src=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/09\/07113633\/10.-IMG_0185.jpg\" alt=\"A fennec fox in a cage\" width=\"1536\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/09\/07113633\/10.-IMG_0185.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/09\/07113633\/10.-IMG_0185-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/09\/07113633\/10.-IMG_0185-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/09\/07113633\/10.-IMG_0185-350x233.jpg 350w, https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/09\/07113633\/10.-IMG_0185-610x407.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1536px) 100vw, 1536px\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wildlife trade is one of the greatest threats to the fennec fox, the world\u2019s smallest, which grows to just 15 centimeters (6 inches) long, making it a sought-after pet. Image by Gloria Dickie.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In Iquitos, Chatuchak finds its parallel at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldanimalprotection.org\/our-campaigns\/past-campaigns\/belen-market-peru\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">Bel\u00e9n Market<\/a>, where a shockingly diverse and sordid array of live animals and animal parts are up for grabs, from jaguar skins and fangs to anacondas. The market, experts say, offers a glimpse of what may also be exported to Asia, such as river fish that are popular in the aquarium trade and yellow-spotted Amazon river turtles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBel\u00e9n shouldn\u2019t be viewed as an isolated market \u2014 it\u2019s a visible node in a much larger wildlife trade network,\u201d says Neil D\u2019Cruze, a wildlife researcher who led <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/conservation-science\/articles\/10.3389\/fcosc.2024.1464332\/full\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">a one-year survey<\/a> of the market\u2019s wild merchandise between September 2022 and September 2023. Image by Gloria Dickie.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Experts say it\u2019s hard to determine why exactly there\u2019s been a marked increase of Latin American wildlife showing up in Southeast Asia in recent years. But social media posts that showcase people playing with and cuddling increasingly exotic species have undoubtedly played a major role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Iquitos, historically, local communities have used wildlife for meat and for spiritual uses, and, increasingly, for pets,\u201d D\u2019Cruze says. But with social media, \u201cwhat\u2019s really changed now is the ability to take those products and reach a broader urban market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe market stall is really just the visible part of a much longer supply chain,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd increasingly, that physical supply chain is intersecting with a global digital marketplace capable of connecting sellers and buyers thousands of miles apart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Previously, the Wildlife Conservation Society <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2022\/10\/a-fast-growing-pipeline-the-amazon-to-southeast-asia-wildlife-trade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">found<\/a> that the wildlife trade between South America and Asia had roughly doubled between the early 2010s and 2020, but much of that was with China.<\/p>\n<p>This trade route is thought to have been aided by more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedialogue.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Chinese-Finance-in-LAC-2018.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">$140 billion in loans<\/a> from state-owned Chinese banks to Latin American countries between 2005 and 2018, according to estimates from the Inter-American Dialogue and the Global China Initiative at Boston University in the U.S. Much of this has gone into infrastructure, mining, and energy projects in the Amazon, prompting foreign workers to flood into the rainforest.<\/p>\n<p>A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/blog\/allen-grane-combating-african-wildlife-trade-china\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\"> similar pattern<\/a> unfolded in the early 2000s when Chinese mining, logging, and infrastructure companies moved into <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/03\/asia-now-hub-of-growing-illegal-wildlife-trade-across-100-countries-study-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Africa,<\/a> sparking catastrophic rates of <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1371\/journal.pone.0059469\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">elephant<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/fevo.2021.607660\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">rhino<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.traffic.org\/news\/asias-unceasing-pangolin-demand\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">pangolin<\/a> poaching.<\/p>\n<p>But experts tell Mongabay it\u2019s likely that the current spate of wild animals heading into Thailand\u2019s markets aren\u2019t cutting through China as an intermediary. \u201cIn Chatuchak and Thailand, the trade is so well established I wouldn\u2019t think that they would need to involve China,\u201d D\u2019Cruze says.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_328980\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/09\/07113325\/9.-IMG_0169-eclectus-parrot.jpg\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-328980\" src=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/09\/07113325\/9.-IMG_0169-eclectus-parrot.jpg\" alt=\"Eclectus parrots in cages\" width=\"1115\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/09\/07113325\/9.-IMG_0169-eclectus-parrot.jpg 1115w, https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/09\/07113325\/9.-IMG_0169-eclectus-parrot-768x705.jpg 768w, https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/09\/07113325\/9.-IMG_0169-eclectus-parrot-610x560.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1115px) 100vw, 1115px\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">This bird, the eclectus parrot, hails from New Guinea, Australia and other parts of Oceania. Image by Gloria Dickie.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Sweltering sloths <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The fact that South American species have caught on in Southeast Asia doesn\u2019t only pose a conservation concern: It also raises animal welfare issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIquitos is the hub of receiving wild animals, even from regions that look far on the map,\u201d Vieto says. \u201cFrom the border with Brazil, it can take a couple days. Animals are moving long distances to reach Iquitos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s small change compared to the rest of the trip. It\u2019s a two-hour flight from Iquitos to Lima, and then more than 25 hours to reach Southeast Asia by plane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are no direct flights, so it will be a super long journey with several stops,\u201d Vieto says. \u201cThat is only causing extreme stress for the animals, and the level of mortality is super high.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unknown exactly how many trafficked animals die in transit. The footage shows a sloth clinging to a tree in the Peruvian jungle as two men hack away at its trunk. When the tree falls, the men grab the animal and stuff it headfirst into a sack before transferring it onto a boat. The sloth is kept that way until it reaches Bel\u00e9n Market, where it\u2019s sold for the equivalent of $13.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you imagine the sloth being inside a sack, the temperature, not being able to hold onto something which is the normal position for the animal?\u201d Vieto says. Sloths are easily stressed and highly specialized animals whose bodies are adapted for life in the canopy, not transport or handling.<\/p>\n<p>Back in Bangkok\u2019s market, Roberton moves past a business whose sign advertises white-cheeked gibbons and toucans for sale. And <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2025\/11\/sloth-selfies-are-feeding-a-booming-wildlife-trafficking-trade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">sloths<\/a>.
