Many experts regard it as pivotal to building renewable energy grids around the globe, while also noting that it affects the marine environment.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>On one hand, offshore wind farms can create mini marine protected areas by prohibiting harmful practices like bottom trawling, and could eventually enable restoration of depleted habitats like oyster reefs.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>But they also bring notable challenges. Alongside well-documented threats to birds and bats, several issues remain poorly understood, such as how large-scale wind platforms might affect ocean circulation, temperature and the movement of sediment.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Researchers say a host of measures can be taken to address some environmental challenges, while underlining the need for continued investment and innovation in solutions.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><button class=\"content-expander\"><span>See All Key Ideas<\/span><\/button><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding: 2px 6px 4px 6px;color: #555555;background-color: #eeeeee;border: #dddddd 2px solid\">This is Part Three in a Mongabay series about trends in the offshore wind industry. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/04\/offshore-winds-clean-energy-potential-remains-largely-untapped-say-experts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Part One<\/a> describes the sector\u2019s untapped potential and gaps between installed energy generation capacity and climate goals. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/07\/scaling-up-offshore-wind-requires-overcoming-global-and-local-challenges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Part Two<\/a> describes challenges the sector faces in scaling up to meet climate goals.<\/p>\n<p>Offshore wind farms are growing in number, with many experts saying this renewable source of energy is vital <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/04\/offshore-winds-clean-energy-potential-remains-largely-untapped-say-experts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">to tackling climate change<\/a>. But many of the same experts caution that responsible construction is required to avoid potentially large impacts on marine ecosystems as farms proliferate in the coming years.<\/p>\n<p>On one hand, offshore wind farms can provide an ecological boon by acting as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0048969725016134\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">de facto<\/a> marine reserves that limit fishing, including harmful practices like bottom trawling. Image by Stephen Magee\/RSPB.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Over the past two decades, offshore wind farm numbers have increased, particularly in China and Europe, and research into the ecosystem effects hasn\u2019t kept pace. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0964569124000085\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">2025 paper<\/a> underlines that <a href=\"https:\/\/pml.ac.uk\/news\/offshore-wind-farms-new-paper-reveals-global-impac\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">86%<\/a> of possible impacts on ecosystem services <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/icesjms\/article\/82\/12\/fsaf235\/8403876\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">remain <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/icesjms\/article\/82\/12\/fsaf235\/8403876\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">\u201c<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/icesjms\/article\/82\/12\/fsaf235\/8403876\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">unknown<\/a>.\u201d Long-term data is lacking to understand how biodiversity and ecosystems respond to wind farms over their entire functional lifespan. Though research is relatively abundant from Europe, particularly the North Sea, it\u2019s far scantier elsewhere where offshore wind is projected to grow, such as Latin America and Asia.<\/p>\n<p>Amidst this global proliferation of offshore wind farms, experts emphasize that mitigating ecological harm is becoming ever more important, particularly in already disturbed ocean environments. While incomplete, the industry is developing and starting to adopt a range of solutions to many of the problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all know that the oceans are already under a lot of stress, and there\u2019s already a lot of activities ongoing, [such as] fisheries and shipping,\u201d Louise Combret, renewable energy policy associate at The Nature Conservancy, told Mongabay in an interview. \u201cWe usually aim for the three C\u2019s. For wind farms, that means identifying sites that avoid potential conflicts with fisheries or ecologically sensitive areas.<\/p>\n<p>Thus far, implementation is lacking in what Aedan Smith, head of policy and advocacy for Scotland at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">Royal Society for the Protection of Birds<\/a>, a U.K.-based NGO, describes as a \u201cgold rush\u201d for optimal near-shore wind farm sites in the North Sea and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur position is super supportive of renewable energy, which includes on and offshore wind,\u201d Smith told Mongabay in a telephone interview. \u201cBut it needs to be done in such a way, as that it minimizes damage and ideally directly benefits nature as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed to Scotland\u2019s planned Berwick Bank Wind Farm. Once operational, it will have 307 turbines in the water producing enough energy to power roughly six million homes, and be one of the largest offshore wind farms in the world. Image courtesy of RWE.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Predicted impacts on seabirds are \u201creally, really huge,\u201d Smith said, with thousands of birds potentially killed in the first year of operation alone, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/marine.gov.scot\/sites\/default\/files\/be5c8f1.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">environmental impact assessments<\/a>. \u201cThis is really raising big alarm bells,\u201d he added. The project was approved on the basis of it including a seabird <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sserenewables.com\/offshore-wind\/projects\/berwick-bank\/ecosystem-management\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">compensation plan<\/a> that proposes funding on-shore habitat protections, among other interventions.<\/p>\n<p>Large-scale wind farms are considered a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-023-31601-z\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">high conservation concern<\/a>\u201d for seabirds, and Berwick Bank is a clear case where marine spatial planning could have prevented siting a wind farm in an ecologically sensitive area, Smith said. Not all wind farms will have such negative impacts on bird populations and recent research from a site in the U.K. suggests that birds may adapt their <a href=\"https:\/\/group.vattenfall.com\/press-and-media\/newsroom\/2026\/how-birdlife-and-offshore-wind-power-interact\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">flight paths to fly around some of them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Organizations such as BirdLife International have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdlife.org\/news\/2023\/02\/20\/sensitivity-mapping-accelerating-offshore-wind-expansion-and-protecting-nature\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">developed sensitivity maps<\/a> to guide planning and offshore development. So far, maps for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/paper-2energy-report_online_Smallest.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">13 European countries<\/a>\u00a0exist, including Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe extent to which they actually inform planning, I would say, varies quite a bit between countries,\u201d Daniel Mitchell, marine program manager at BirdLife International, told Mongabay. And while the size of the footprint during construction and operation is coming into focus, during decommissioning and turbine removal it remains hazy.<\/p>\n<p>People often cite impacts on whales, particularly offshore wind farms causing whale deaths, as a serious concern, but there is no scientific evidence to back such claims, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/new-england-mid-atlantic\/marine-life-distress\/frequent-questions-offshore-wind-and-whales\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/a>. These often originate with local misinformation campaigns against offshore wind in places such as the U.S., U.K. and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/nov\/12\/how-a-false-claim-about-wind-turbines-killing-whales-is-spinning-out-of-control-in-coastal-australia\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">Australia<\/a> (a phenomenon Mongabay will explore later in this series).<\/p>\n<p>Noise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.int-res.com\/journals\/meps\/articles\/meps12560\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">pollution<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep-wcmc.org\/en\/news\/how-offshore-wind-projects-can-affect-marine-migratory-species\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">construction<\/a> and to a lesser extent <a href=\"https:\/\/tethys.pnnl.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/summaries\/SEER-Educational-Research-Brief-Underwater-Noise-Effects.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">operation<\/a> can disturb cetaceans and other marine life, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whoi.edu\/ocean-learning-hub\/ocean-facts\/are-offshore-wind-farms-harming-whales\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">increased ship traffic<\/a> also poses risks. Though no incidents have been reported, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0308597X24005189\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">collisions with and entanglements<\/a> in platform cables and anchors are concerns for floating wind farms that necessitate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2025-09\/Entanglements_Report_R_25-08-A_05_locked.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">careful mitigation measures<\/a>. These include selecting appropriate cable type and size, continual monitoring and creating a response plan.<\/p>\n<p>Certain steps can be taken to mitigate known impacts, such as deploying bubble curtains to reduce noise during construction, utilizing bio-friendly concrete or other \u201cgreen\u201d materials and modifying foundation structures to make them suitable as habitat.<\/p>\n<p>Other potential mitigation measures are in the experimental stage. Trials are underway to test <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/offshore-wind-farm-construction-is-noisy-but-gadgets-used-to-protect-marine-mammals-are-working-198090\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">acoustic deterrents<\/a> to ward away wildlife during wind farm construction. Increasing the visibility of turbines using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glamox.com\/news-and-stories\/bird-friendly-lighting\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">lighting<\/a> or paint could help mitigate some impacts on birds, though probably not for all species. Trials, thus far, on land and at sea, have had mixed results.<\/p>\n<p>Research shows that corrosion protection using sacrificial anodes on <a href=\"https:\/\/pml.ac.uk\/news\/offshore-wind-farms-could-cause-significant-ecosystem-economic-and-human-health-risks\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">wind turbines can leach metals into surrounding waters<\/a>. A 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s44183-024-00101-6\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">paper<\/a> estimates European wind farms currently release more than 3,000 metric tons of aluminum, more than 1,000 metric tons of zinc, and 1.9 metric tons of indium annually, posing environmental and human health concerns for proposed shellfish and seaweed farms colocated with wind farms. But when it comes to restoring and achieving \u201cnet positive\u201d benefits for ecosystems, there are no clear answers yet, though a host of promising pilot projects are underway.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is to integrate pro-biodiversity solutions into the technical design of the wind farm, said Marjolein Kelder, senior project lead at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therichnorthsea.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">The Rich North Sea<\/a>, a Netherlands-based NGO.<\/p>\n<p>Her organization is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.org\/en-us\/newsroom\/topping-collaboration-launch\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">involved in trials<\/a> to set oyster larvae on stones used for scour protection that stabilizes the seabed and prevents erosion around turbine platform foundations. The North Sea, for example, will see an increase from roughly 4,000 turbines today to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hw.ac.uk\/news\/2026\/study-shows-offshore-wind-could-potentially-cover-11-of-north-sea-by-2050\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">potentially<\/a> as many as 19,400, according to a study. Researchers are still working out the full consequences of this huge uptick in wind-energy absorbing platforms on coastal ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple concerns have emerged about offshore turbines\u2019 effect on the physical circulation of air and water, and on the local atmosphere and climate, said Wenyan Zhang, a researcher at the Helmholtz Center, a German research institute. His own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43247-026-03390-6\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">research<\/a> shows that wind turbines in the North Sea can move millions of tons of sediment and stir up thousands of tons of organic carbon each year during normal operations.<\/p>\n<p>Wakes caused by spinning blades also affect the mixing of water and can reduce the efficiency of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0306261924023390\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">turbines further down wind<\/a>. One study found that wind and tidal wakes from turbines can also lead to long-term surface <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43247-026-03186-8\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">warming of 0.2<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43247-026-03186-8\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">\u00b0 Celsius<\/a>\u00a0(0.36 \u00b0Fahrenheit) in areas close to wind farms, causing shifts in local climates with predicted changes to rainfall.<\/p>\n<p>Some research indicates that wakes from <a href=\"https:\/\/ui.adsabs.harvard.edu\/abs\/2026AGUOSMHC41A.05Z\/abstract\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">turbines<\/a> influence <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s44183-026-00202-4\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">ocean stratification<\/a>, the layering of water based on density and temperature, Michela De Dominicis, senior scientist at the National Oceanography Centre, a U.K.-based research institution, said in an interview with Mongabay. Image courtesy of \u00d8rsted.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Farming the ocean\u2019s wind responsibly <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Multiple experts underlined that governments should use policy solutions to drive continued innovation to minimize the ecological impact of wind farms. One approach is including \u201cnon-price criteria\u201d in the auction and permitting process. This means environmental or social aspects of a company\u2019s bid carry weight in authorities\u2019 decisions about whether to proceed with a project.
