The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) estimates the current minimum population of Javan rhinos at about 50, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savetherhino.org\/rhino-info\/population-figures\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">a figure used by conservation groups such as Save the Rhino International<\/a>, while Indonesia\u2019s forestry ministry puts the population at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kehutanan.go.id\/news\/peringatan-hari-badak-sedunia-2025-badak-lestari-bumi-berseri\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">87 to 100<\/a>. The government\u2019s figures have previously faced scrutiny after a 2023 investigation by Indonesian environmental group Auriga Nusantara <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2023\/04\/flawed-count-puts-glorified-javan-rhinos-on-path-to-extinction-report-says\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">found<\/a> that rhinos not seen by camera traps for years, including some later confirmed dead, were still included in official counts.<\/p>\n<p>The discrepancy is significant because the species is confined to Ujung Kulon National Park on the western tip of Java, making it particularly vulnerable to threats in a single habitat. Since 2011, official counts had shown the population steadily increasing, but Auriga\u2019s 2023 investigation found evidence that the government\u2019s method could overstate the number of living animals.<\/p>\n<p>Riszki Is Hardianto, a wildlife conservation researcher at Auriga and co-author of the 2023 report, said he had not received reports of any rhino deaths linked to the eruption. \u201cWhat\u2019s threatening the Javan rhinos is if a tsunami occurs there,\u201d he told Mongabay in a WhatsApp message on Sept. 10.<\/p>\n<p>Once widespread across South and Southeast Asia, the Javan rhino has lost most of its historical range to hunting and habitat loss and is now confined to Ujung Kulon National Park, meaning the loss of this population would result in the species\u2019 extinction in the wild, erasing an entire evolutionary lineage with no wild population left from which it could recover.<\/p>\n<p>Tsunamis have long been considered a major threat because the rhinos live in low-lying coastal habitat; a tsunami that struck Ujung Kulon in December 2018 killed one rhino and highlighted the vulnerability of a population concentrated in a single area. Image courtesy of the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Conservationists have long urged Indonesia to establish a second habitat for Javan rhinos to reduce the risk of the entire population being wiped out by disease or a natural disaster. A leading candidate, the 5,000-hectare (12,400-acre) Cikepuh wildlife reserve on Java\u2019s southern coast, was ruled too risky in 2019, because it was also used for military training, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2019\/07\/search-for-a-new-home-for-javan-rhinos-put-on-hold\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">prompting the government to focus instead on expanding suitable habitat<\/a> within Ujung Kulon.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia has also begun moving individual rhinos within Ujung Kulon as part of efforts to manage the species\u2019 small population and limited genetic diversity.
