On the ground, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Drift_fence\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\"><u>drift fences<\/u><\/a> were created to lead animals to pitfall traps, while box style <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sherman_trap\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\"><u>Sherman live traps<\/u><\/a> were baited with feed. But the usual rodent lure \u2014 peanut butter \u2014 failed to attract the mice in Sri Lanka, so the researchers instead turned to something more familiar to the local mice \u2014 pieces of burnt coconut.<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0 March 11, 2004, one of the pitfall traps caught a small mouse that looked different. Six days later, a second specimen was caught in a baited trap. Both were females, not larger than a child\u2019s palm, with fulvous-gray pelage broken by spiny guard hairs and a slender, naked tail longer than the head and body. Image courtesy of Suyama Boyagoda.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The two mice remained a scientific mystery for more than two decades, but careful genetic and morphological evidence finally confirmed what researchers had suspected all along, and they soon introduced a species new to science. It\u2019s been named <a href=\"https:\/\/zookeys.pensoft.net\/article\/163907\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\"><em><u>Mus dumbara<\/u><\/em><\/a>, commonly known as the Dumbara valley\u2019s spiny mouse, a name that links the rodent to its locality.<\/p>\n<p>Sri Lanka is home to 16 species of rats and mice with six of them endemic. The new discovery adds another endemic mammal to Sri Lanka\u2019s list.<\/p>\n<p><strong>An elusive new rodent<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Dumbara spiny mouse looks elusive,\u201d said study lead author <a href=\"https:\/\/sci.pdn.ac.lk\/zoology\/staff\/Suyama-Boyagoda\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">Suyama<\/a> Boyagoda,\u00a0 current head of the department of zoology and chairperson of the board of study in zoological sciences at the Postgraduate Institute of Science (PGIS), University of Peradeniya. Image courtesy of Suyama Boyagoda.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The new species belongs to the subgenus <em>Pyromys<\/em> and can be distinguished from its closest Sri Lankan relatives, <em>Mus fernandoni<\/em> and <em>Mus mayori<\/em>, by a combination of physical characteristics, she said. Its tail is distinctly longer than its head-and-body length. Its hind feet have pinkish-white toes, while the remaining dorsal surface is covered by a mixture of fulvous-brown, gray and white hairs.<\/p>\n<p>The skull provided additional clues as <em>M. dumbara<\/em> has a moderately prominent ridge above the eye socket, known as a supraorbital ridge. The strongest evidence came from the DNA showing more than 11.7% genetic divergence between <em>M. dumbara<\/em> and the other two species, Boyagoda noted.<\/p>\n<p>Sri Lanka and India\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Western_Ghats\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\"><u>Western Ghats<\/u><\/a> together form one of the world\u2019s most recognized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/237054462_A_brief_overview_of_the_Western_Ghats_-_Sri_Lanka_biodiversity_hotspot\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\"><u>biodiversity hotspots<\/u><\/a>. Although temporary land connections across the Palk Strait linked the island with southern India during Pleistocene glacial periods, Sri Lanka\u2019s wildlife has remained isolated for long enough to evolve along a distinct path.<\/p>\n<p>This is particularly evident in the island\u2019s wet-zone and montane forests, where exceptional levels of endemism have developed, said <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=TT7wlZwAAAAJ&amp;hl=en\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\"><u>Madhava Meegaskumbura<\/u><\/a>, a Sri Lankan evolutionary biologist and researcher at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gxu.edu.cn\/en\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\"><u>Guangxi University<\/u><\/a> in China.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_329522\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-329522\" src=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/09\/12140519\/4.-Spiny-mouse-though-not-attractive-mouse-plays-important-role-food-webs-Black-Eagle-c-Saranga-deva-de-Alwis-1-768x476.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"476\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Small mammals, though often overlooked, are an important source of prey for many predators, like this black eagle (<em>Ictinaetus malaiensis<\/em>), illustrating the important role rodents play in forest food webs. Image courtesy of Saranga Deva de Alwis.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meegaskumbura, a co-author of the new study, was among the initial research team and, in fact, collected the first specimen of this elusive mouse along with Sri Lankan biologist Mohammed Bahir.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Less researched small mammals <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn recent decades, scientists have described numerous new species of frogs, lizards and freshwater crabs. Mammals, however, have produced comparatively few such discoveries, partly because they tend to be larger and more readily detected. The discovery of <em>Mus dumbara<\/em> adds another species to this relatively short list of recently recognized Sri Lankan mammals,\u201d\u00a0Meegaskumbura said.<\/p>\n<p>So far, <em>M. dumbara<\/em> has been recorded from just one valley in the Knuckles Range, leaving considerable uncertainty about its true distribution and population size. The species may occur in other forest fragments that have not been surveyed, or survive at very low densities, or may have experienced a decline since the first specimens were collected, Meegaskumbura noted.<\/p>\n<p>Even though Knuckles Range is a <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/1203\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\"><u>UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/u><\/a> with formal protection, less conspicuous mammals can easily be overlooked in conservation planning. Given the limited information currently available, Meegaskumbura added that <em>M. dumbara<\/em> should be treated cautiously as a species potentially at risk of extinction until further surveys establish its actual distribution and population status.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery little research has been carried out on Sri Lanka\u2019s small mammals, and several important gaps remain, where we need extensive island-wide surveys to understand their distributions and habitat associations and to determine whether undescribed or overlooked species like <em>Mus dumbara<\/em> remain,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Sampath-Goonatilake\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\"><u>Sampath Goonatilake<\/u><\/a>, a researcher with IUCN Sri Lanka who studies small mammals. \u201cOne of the biggest needs is a comprehensive taxonomic revision, using both classical taxonomy and modern phylogenetic approaches, to clarify the identity, classification and evolutionary relationships of the species we currently recognize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lack of research is partly because studying small mammals is demanding and expensive as researchers may have to spend weeks or even months in forest habitats to obtain enough samples, creating substantial logistical and fieldwork costs, Goonatilake told Mongabay.<\/p>\n<p>There are also relatively few up-to-date identification guides for Sri Lanka\u2019s small mammals, which makes accurate field identification more difficult. At the same time, these animals tend to attract less attention from researchers and students than larger or more charismatic mammals.
