The marine biologist could see clear signs that this one had been killed by a vessel\u2019s propeller.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She recognized it from the wound on its head: a colleague had sent her a video of the injured animal near the island of Ponza, some 100 kilometers (60 miles) away, a couple of weeks earlier. \u201cThis means it died slowly, in agony. As with many collision cases, death isn\u2019t instantaneous,\u201d Stanzani, the founder of Sotto al Mare, an Italian cetacean research and conservation association, told Mongabay during an interview in Ostia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a young whale with a wound about a meter (3 feet) long. \u201cFor such a deep and clean cut to penetrate the skin of a sperm whale, it must have been a propeller,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sperm whales sleep vertically, just below the surface of the water, and the wound near its eye matched the height of a vessel\u2019s propeller. \u201cWhen a cetacean sleeps, half its brain is inactive,\u201d Stanzani said. \u201cAnd sound dispersal is different underwater. Image by Federica Rossi for Mongabay.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-vessel-strike-problem\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The vessel strike problem<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though sperm whales (<em>Physeter macrocephalus<\/em>) and fin whales (<em>Balaenoptera physalus<\/em>) are typically associated with vast oceans, the Mediterranean is also home to populations of these large cetacean species. Both populations are classified as endangered by <a href=\"https:\/\/portals.iucn.org\/library\/sites\/library\/files\/documents\/RL-262-005-En.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">the <\/a>IUCN, the global wildlife conservation authority. Globally, more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.adp1950\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">90% of shipping routes<\/a> overlap with whales\u2019 migratory paths, and the Mediterranean is a phenomenally busy sea, hosting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0308597X16301853#:~:text=The%20Mediterranean%20Sea%20is%20one,the%20Mediterranean%20Sea%20%5B3%5D.\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">15% of global shipping activity<\/a> despite accounting for less than 1% of the world\u2019s ocean surface. Against the backdrop of rising maritime congestion in the Mediterranean, conservationists fear collisions could drive the disappearance of this sea\u2019s giants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fin and sperm whales are slow to reach reproductive maturity, and their losses have outsized impacts on the ecosystem. Describing whales as \u201cthe biggest warriors against climate change,\u201d Aylin Akkaya, scientific director at the Turkish NGO Marine Mammals Research Organization (DMAD), told Mongabay in a phone interview that large cetaceans are the \u201cspoon in the soup,\u201d feeding in the depths before excreting nutrient-rich waste at the sea\u2019s surface. This fertilizes microscopic organisms like phytoplankton, which absorb the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide and produce about half of the world\u2019s oxygen. In addition, during their typically long lives, whales <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/feature-story\/whales-and-carbon-sequestration-can-whales-store-carbon\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">sequester<\/a> many tons of carbon in their large bodies as they feed and grow. Image courtesy of Oceanomare Delphis Archive.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strikes are almost always fatal to whales when the vessel is traveling above 15 knots (28 kilometers per hour), <a href=\"https:\/\/tethys.pnnl.gov\/publications\/vessel-collisions-whales-probability-lethal-injury-based-vessel-speed\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">research shows<\/a>. \u00a0An analysis by Magma Magazine and Mongabay of data from the Global Fishing Watch (GFW) vessel-tracking platform found that in 2025 almost 2,800 unique large vessels traveled above this threshold through the Mediterranean\u2019s key whale habitats: the Pelagos Sanctuary, spanning the waters of Italy, France and Monaco; the eastern Mediterranean\u2019s Hellenic Trench; and the Cetacean Migration Corridor, off Spain. In these areas, about 30 ships exceeded 15 knots at any given moment. The analysis specifically tracked merchant ships above 100 gross metric tons in volume, as registered by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using vessel data from GFW and whale telemetry data provided by the Tethys Research Institute and the EDMAKTUB Association, Italian and Spanish marine research organizations respectively, a visualization by Mongabay illustrates how dense maritime traffic poses a continuous threat to whales in the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- iframe plugin v.6.0 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ --><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"scrolly-embed\" style=\"width:100vw; height:calc(100vh - 88px); display:block; border:0; position:relative; left:50%; transform:translateX(-50%);\" scrolling=\"yes\" src=\"https:\/\/scrollymap2026whalecollisions.vercel.app\/\" width=\"100%\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group inner is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-4fc3f8e1 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experts stress that collisions with ships are a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oceancare.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/250912-ENG-ship-strikes-and-CMC-factsheet-QA-short-version-12-logos.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">leading anthropogenic killer<\/a> of the Mediterranean\u2019s two endangered large-bodied cetacean species. In establishing both Mediterranean fin and sperm whales as endangered, the IUCN notes that in 2021 the populations each contained fewer than 2,500 mature individuals and long-running declines were inferred. The most <a href=\"https:\/\/accobams.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/ASI-Med-Report-updated.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">comprehensive survey,<\/a> by the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Contiguous Atlantic Area (Accobams) in 2018-2019, estimated some 2,135 fin whales and 1,416 sperm whales remain in the region. A second Accobams survey is underway this year, with further population declines considered likely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI would say one-third of the sperm whales we have encountered carry ship strike marks,\u201d Akkaya said. \u201cWe [recently] saw one with a propeller cut right below the dorsal [fin]. Another with the dorsal fin gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0964569123000108\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">study<\/a> concluded that collisions kill, by a conservative estimate, an average of 16.6 Mediterranean fin whales each year, exceeding the level that would permit population recovery. <a href=\"https:\/\/iwc.int\/management-and-conservation\/vessel-strikes\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">The International Whaling Commission<\/a> says assessing the true scale of the problem is difficult as strikes often go unnoticed on large vessels and many carcasses sink without a trace. Moreover, maritime radar and sonar systems cannot easily detect whales, so ships struggle to avoid them, while ships\u2019 vast bows often block engine noise, meaning whales may not hear them in time to move away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have no idea how many die: collisions happen at high seas, animals don\u2019t reach the shore, collisions aren\u2019t reported,\u201d Txema Brotons, the scientific director of Spanish marine research organization Asociaci\u00f3n Tursiops, said in a phone interview.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1536\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/09\/08140556\/Tolomeo-2.jpg\" alt=\"Tolomeo, a sperm whale in the Gulf of Naples tracked by the Italian cetacean conservation group Oceanomare Delphis. Image courtesy of Oceanomare Delphis Archive.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"h-curbing-speeds-in-whale-habitats\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Curbing speeds in whale habitats<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following a proposal by Spain, Italy, France and Monaco, the IMO designated a more than 200,000-square-kilometer (80,000-square-mile) swath of the northwestern Mediterranean a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) in 2023 to protect whales from ship traffic. It recommended speeds of 10-13 knots (19-24 km\/h) in the multinational marine area stretching from Valencia to Genoa, which includes key cetacean habitats \u2014 the Pelagos Sanctuary, the Gulf of Lions, and the Cetacean Migration Corridor \u2014 but also intense shipping traffic. Research suggests 10 knots is the threshold for avoiding lethal strikes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But these voluntary speed recommendations appear ineffectual, Carlos Bravo Villa, an ocean policy specialist at OceanCare, an international NGO headquartered in Switzerland, told Mongabay during a phone interview. He pointed to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oceancare.org\/en\/stories_and_news\/ship-speeds-unchanged-nw-med-pssa\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">analysis<\/a> the NGO commissioned finding more than 80% of travel in the PSSA by the six main merchant ship categories during 2023 and 2024 occurred at speeds above 10 knots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OceanCare argues reducing speeds is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oceancare.org\/en\/stories_and_news\/new-data-confirms-limiting-ship-speed-is-necessary-to-prevent-extinction-of-great-whales-in-the-north-western-mediterranean\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">best way to prevent<\/a> lethal collisions in the PSSA. It has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oceancare.org\/en\/stories_and_news\/ship-speeds-unchanged-nw-med-pssa\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">urged the Spanish government<\/a> to mandate a general 10-knot limit in the Spanish Cetacean Migratory Corridor, with different rules to be determined for merchant vessels and scheduled ferries. Bravo said the shipping industry is unlikely to reduce speeds en masse unless compulsory regulation creates a \u201clevel playing field,\u201d and described these policy recommendations as a pragmatic \u201cfirst step\u201d that will reduce fatal collisions by a degree.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But curbing speeds across the PSSA would likely prove challenging. \u201cA mandatory speed reduction in such a large area has not been implemented so far,\u201d Renaud Corniquet, Accobams\u2019s project officer, told Mongabay in a phone interview. \u201cYou have some examples in the U.S. but it\u2019s very close to their territorial waters.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group inner is-vertical is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-4fc3f8e1 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Andrew Birchenough, technical officer of ocean policy and pollution prevention at the IMO, said new rules could be introduced in the PSSA, for instance speed limits or routing changes that target parts of the PSSA considered high risk for vessel strikes. \u201cIt\u2019s an ongoing process, so if member states are monitoring, evaluating, they can propose more measures,\u201d he told Mongabay over a call.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If it were up to Claudia Mondino, the captain of Eco Valencia, a ferry operated by the Italian Grimaldi Group, ships would slow down to limit harm to whales, she said. \u201cBut commercially the situation is very different,\u201d she told Mongabay in a phone interview. \u201cThe routes still have to meet certain schedules, we have ports with very tight gates. It would mean completely overturning the whole system.\u201d Mondino\u2019s vessel travels at speeds of 18-20 knots (33-37 km\/h) between Italy and Spain, and she encounters container and passenger vessels \u201cthat reach 25 knots,\u201d or about 46 km\/h.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mondino said she keeps watch for whales where possible: \u201cWe can recognize them when they blow. In that case we tend to reroute. Image by Clea Skopeliti for Mongabay.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"h-other-solutions-being-explored\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other solutions being explored <\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, Asociaci\u00f3n Tursiops is focused on technological solutions. These include developing dynamic risk maps that could warn vessels about cetaceans\u2019 likely positions using satellite data to track water nutrient levels and other factors. \u201cIf you can predict where sperm whales are most likely to be at a given time, you can try to implement speed reductions in very specific locations, or warn shipping companies,\u201d Brotons said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some habitats, rerouting is possible. Simone Panigada, president of the Tethys Research Institute, told Mongabay that in parts of the Hellenic Trench, moving shipping slightly farther offshore could reduce collisions with the eastern Mediterranean\u2019s sperm whales, of which only around 300 remain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As this is not an option in the busy Strait of Kythira, between mainland Greece\u2019s Peloponnese Peninsula and western Crete, the Greek government, alongside the shipping industry and NGOs,\u00a0 is developing an acoustic warning system. Successfully tested during a 2019-2020 pilot, the SAvE Whales system uses hydrophones to passively listen for sperm whales\u2019 clicks and warn ships, Ioli Christopoulou, policy director at the Green Tank, a project partner, told Mongabay over a call. Its launch is set for 2028.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The technology could work well at other chokepoints like the Strait of Gibraltar, a collision hotspot, where rerouting, the most effective solution, is not possible, Christopoulou said. \u201cOne of the beauties of this project is that it\u2019s really specific to the problem. It\u2019s a bottleneck you can really solve,\u201d she said. But exporting an alert system to other situations would be challenging, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the rest of the Mediterranean, the future appears more uncertain.
