The fires were reported at Wonotirto, near the main toll road, and at Bukit Tengkorak in the Bukit Soeharto protected forest.<\/p>\n<p>These wildfires were in the outer zone designated for Nusantara, authorities in the new capital said, but had stopped short of the construction site of the government complex.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHopefully, it won\u2019t reoccur,\u201d Danis H. Image by Riyad Dafhi Rizki\/Mongabay Indonesia.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Tale of two cities\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Plans to build Nusantara and move Indonesia\u2019s capital from Jakarta were unveiled by then-president Joko Widodo in 2019. Image courtesy of IKN Authority.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Right to clean air <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Firefighters have been battling fires across Indonesia since the main dry season began in July. In recent decades, much of Borneo\u2019s peatlands have been drained and converted to oil palm plantations.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia\u2019s fire season is already showing signs of becoming one of the country\u2019s most severe in years, with remote-sensing platforms showing fire activity surging.<\/p>\n<p>At one air pollution detector operated by Indonesia\u2019s environment ministry, very fine particle, PM2.5 concentrations, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iqair.com\/air-quality\/indonesia\/central-kalimantan\/mengkalip\/kabupaten-barito-selatan-sanggu\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">South Barito district<\/a> in neighboring Central Kalimantan province barely dropped below 600 micrograms per cubic meter (\u00b5g\/m\u00b3) for 24 hours on Sept. 14\u2014 which was more than 40 times the World Health Organization\u2019s recommended <a href=\"https:\/\/iris.who.int\/server\/api\/core\/bitstreams\/551b515e-2a32-4e1a-a58c-cdaecd395b19\/content\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">24-hour guideline of just 15 \u00b5g\/m\u00b3<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sri Murlianti, social development lecturer at Mulawarman University, in the nearby city of Samarinda, said the fires showed the challenges associated with paving a futuristic new city on land shaped by decades of ecological damage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe measure of development success should not be just how many buildings are built, or how much investment is made,\u201d Sri told Mongabay Indonesia. \u201cBut whether the people living nearby have the most basic right \u2014 to breathe safe air.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fire is often used to clear land quickly, but drained peat can burn uncontrollably, particularly during El Ni\u00f1o-fuelled heat and drought. In East Kalimantan, the center of Indonesia\u2019s coal industry, more than a quarter of the province\u2019s GDP in 2025 came from coal mining.<\/p>\n<p>Refinaya Jamiilfitriani, a young environmental advocate and coordinator of Mahardhika Samarinda Women\u2019s group, pointed to the heightened domestic burden shouldered by women in the home amid increased air pollution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChildren cannot play freely outside, vulnerable members of the family require more attention, the house needs to be cleaned more frequently, and health needs monitoring,\u201d Refinaya said.<\/p>\n<p>Communities around Nusantara, meanwhile, report anxieties over air pollution, from the city of\u00a0\u00a0 Balikpapan through surrounding districts Kutai Kartanegara, North Penajam Paser, Paser and Samarinda.<\/p>\n<p>Deden Wahyudi, who lives in Sepaku Lama village within the grounds of the new capital, said the village was enveloped by smoke in late August, risking the health of his mother Jakiyah, who was diagnosed with pneumonia.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_329774\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/09\/15114839\/877ABB11-979E-4BE3-8B9F-1099853CBEF4_1_201_a.jpeg\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-329774\" src=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/09\/15114839\/877ABB11-979E-4BE3-8B9F-1099853CBEF4_1_201_a.jpeg\" alt=\"Air quality index in Balikpapan earlier this month.\" width=\"828\" height=\"695\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/09\/15114839\/877ABB11-979E-4BE3-8B9F-1099853CBEF4_1_201_a.jpeg 828w, https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/09\/15114839\/877ABB11-979E-4BE3-8B9F-1099853CBEF4_1_201_a-768x645.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/09\/15114839\/877ABB11-979E-4BE3-8B9F-1099853CBEF4_1_201_a-610x512.jpeg 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 828px) 100vw, 828px\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Air quality index in Balikpapan earlier this month.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In Balikpapan, a city of almost 800,000, local residents said they were worried about the pollution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was fog,\u201d Balikpapan resident Emi said. \u201cBut it smelled like smoke from something burning, like something had burned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emi, who is pregnant and has a 3-year-old child, said she was worried about the effects of the smoke on her family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere have been cases here, but they\u2019re\u00a0not as\u00a0numerous and severe as elsewhere,\u201d she said. \u201cIf this is actually smoke carried [from wildfires] and reaching here, it\u2019s already really bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Data from the Balikpapan city health department showed diagnoses of respiratory disease increased by almost 20% in August over July to 1,361 cases in the city. Health officials have cautioned, however, that the data do not yet establish a link between the increase in illness and the wildfires.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, disaster management officials in North Penajam Paser \u2014 the district that originally contained the land for Indonesia\u2019s new capital \u2014 said they were braced for more fires to come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur focus is on stockpiling masks, distributing these to the public, and providing education and outreach to reduce outdoor activities,\u201d said Nurlaila, who leads the disaster management office of the district.<\/p>\n<p>For many workers, there is no choice but to continue working outdoors despite the heightened health risks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about daily laborers, small traders, motorcycle taxi drivers, farmers?\u201d Refinaya said. \u201cSo if they\u2019re not able to leave the house, that just means they\u2019ll go hungry tomorrow because they won\u2019t earn any income \u2014 why are people continually being asked to adapt to damage they didn\u2019t create?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Banner image:<\/strong> A forest and land fire burning in the Bukit Soeharto protected forest area in Sepaku, North Penajam Paser regency, Sept. 1, 2026.
