It\u2019s been hovering between \u201cunhealthy\u201d and \u201chazardous\u201d in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Haazim, who asked to be identified only by his given names for privacy reasons, lives in Kuching, the capital of Malaysia\u2019s Sarawak state. It is known as one of the cities with the cleanest air quality in the country, but since last month, Kuching has earned a dubious distinction of being the world\u2019s \u201cmost polluted major city,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iqair.com\/newsroom\/transboundary-air-quality-alert-kuching-malaysia-most-polluted-major-city\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">according<\/a> to IQAir, a Swiss-based air quality technology company. The culprit? <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/short-article\/2026\/09\/as-indonesias-wildfires-rage-haze-spreads-farther-across-southeast-asia\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Smog from Indonesia\u2019s wildfires<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has deeply disrupted my daily routine,\u201d Haazim said of the haze. \u201cOutdoor routines are completely on hold; morning and evening walks are out of the question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An avid marathon runner, Haazim no longer runs five times a week outdoors. \u201cI am now down to just two indoor runs,\u201d he told Mongabay last week. Image by AP Photo\/Xpin Voon.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He can\u2019t forget his long drive home from Lawas, a Sarawak town located between Sabah and Brunei, on Aug. 31. \u201cThe haze became much thicker as we went back to Kuching,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we arrived in Kuching, it was like a video game, like a Silent Hill type of scenery,\u201d he added, referring to the popular survival horror video game. He said it was like he suddenly entered \u201canother dimension.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Transboundary haze <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/08\/indonesias-wildfire-season-surges-as-haze-spreads-into-malaysia\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">first arrived in Sarawak<\/a>, in the northern part of Borneo Island, in mid-August this year. The toxic air has lingered since then, except for a few days of respite, thanks to rainfall induced by cloud-seeding operations.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, the air quality was so bad that the Malaysian government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nst.com.my\/news\/nation\/2026\/09\/1527420\/king-lifts-emergency-declaration-serian-watch\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">declared<\/a> a state of emergency in Serian, a border district south of Kuching, located about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Indonesia. Nearly 200,000 students in Sarawak had to resort to online learning as authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nst.com.my\/news\/regional\/2026\/09\/1525741\/647-sarawak-schools-close-5-days-over-haze\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">closed<\/a> 647 schools in 12 districts from Sept. 7 to 11.<\/p>\n<p>Haze has spread to other parts of Borneo, including the Malaysian state of Sabah and the oil-rich sultanate of Brunei. On the same day, <a href=\"https:\/\/asmc.asean.org\/home\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre<\/a> detected <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/cM3SC\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">haze in southern Vietnam<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>From headaches to skin rashes<\/h2>\n<p>Youth activist and school teacher Priska Magdalena Sinem, who lives in Kota Belud, Sabah, in northeastern Borneo, said haze had affected her health, making it difficult for her to conduct outdoor activities, such as jogging and evening walks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had headaches several times due to the heat and haze,\u201d she told Mongabay. \u201cThe haze often causes dizziness and fatigue, which makes driving [to and from work] and meeting people throughout the day quite challenging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Peninsular Malaysia, people have posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@adiazwari_\/post\/DdVbHZMmg0m\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">photos<\/a> of the Kuala Lumpur skyline, including the iconic Petronas Towers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@muhammadnasyraf\/post\/DdBT9sDk--t\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">blanketed<\/a> in haze on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Theater practitioner Tarrant Kwok complained of having a sore throat several times in recent weeks, as well as coughing up phlegm. Image courtesy of Estelle Ng for Mongabay.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Elsewhere in Kuala Lumpur, Estelle Ng, a mother of two, discovered her eldest child, 4, had skin rashes, a common health effect of <a href=\"https:\/\/ascensushealth.com.sg\/blog\/the-haze-and-skin-health\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">haze<\/a>. She said she also heard from other parents at their kindergarten that children with asthma suffered from breathing issues after air quality worsened.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysian authorities warn that haze can cause various health issues, including itchy throat, coughing, sneezing, a runny nose, difficulty breathing, watery eyes, itchy skin and chest pains. In late August, the health ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.malaymail.com\/news\/malaysia\/2026\/08\/23\/health-ministry-reports-surge-in-respiratory-illnesses-as-several-areas-hit-unhealthy-api-levels\/232408\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">announced<\/a> that within a week, cases of asthma had jumped by 259%, while upper respiratory tract infections rose by 124%.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelnewsasia.com\/singapore\/haze-nea-psi-unhealthy-forecast-daily-advisories-6362211\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">started<\/a> issuing haze advisories on Sept. 4, when transboundary haze caused <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haze.gov.sg\/resources\/readings-over-the-last-24-hours\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI)<\/a> to hit unhealthy levels \u2014 the first time since October 2023. The city\u2019s haze task force began implementing mitigation measures, including opening air-conditioned rooms in community centers to the public and ensuring classrooms are equipped with air purifiers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe use air purifiers,\u201d Singaporean resident Jeannie Hoh told Mongabay. \u201cWe have one in the living room and one in the bedroom. The haze is bearable if you are mainly indoors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, Hoh, who suffered from sinusitis, said she noticed that outdoors, \u201cthe smell in the air is quite nauseating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schools have also taken precautionary measures. When Hoh dropped off her two-year-old son at kindergarten last week, she said the teacher told her there would be no outdoor activities.<\/p>\n<p>Haze began to drift across the Sulu Sea in late August, reaching the Philippines from Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>In the first week of September, air quality reached \u201cacutely unhealthy\u201d levels in parts of Luzon island, including Manila\u2019s metropolitan areas; the Visayas island group; and Mindanao island. Image by AP Photo\/Aaron Favila.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Emma Santillan, a social worker in Cebu City, said she couldn\u2019t smell the haze but could feel it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe texture of the air was different,\u201d she said, describing an itchy sensation in her nose and a gritty feeling in her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>She said the smog was so thick that for several days she could not see the cumulus clouds normally visible in the sky. People wore face masks when they went outside, she told Mongabay, \u201cThere were also people who were coughing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Quezon City, part of Metro Manila, Sally Truita, a mother of three, said the sight and smell of the smog made her uneasy, reminding her of a recent house fire in her neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I smelled it, I got scared because of what happened to our neighbor whose house burned down,\u201d she told Mongabay.<\/p>\n<h2>Playing with fire<\/h2>\n<p>Wildfires have raged across Indonesia since July, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/08\/world-must-look-to-the-past-to-prepare-for-likely-unprecedented-el-nino\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">exacerbated by a \u201csuper\u201d El Ni\u00f1o<\/a>, which brings extremely dry conditions. Image by Krismes Santo Haloho\/Mongabay Indonesia.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As of Sept. 14, <a href=\"https:\/\/map.nusantara-atlas.org\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">FireWatch<\/a>, a satellite monitoring platform, had detected more than 617,400 fire hotspots, which indicate potential fire sites, across the country \u2014 more than double the number during the same period in 2019, one of Indonesia\u2019s worst wildfire seasons. More than 895,000 hectares (2.2 million acres) had been burnt as of August 2026, 33% more than the same period seven years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Fire emissions from Indonesia from Sept. 1 to 7 this year soared to 19.7 million metric tons, the highest in the world, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/indonesian-wildfire-emissions-surge-worlds-highest-data-shows-2026-09-09\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">according<\/a> to data from Fire Emissions Watch, a portal from the European Union\u2019s Copernicus climate monitoring service.<\/p>\n<p>As in previous years, many fires burn on peatlands in low-lying areas in Sumatra and Kalimantan, Indonesia\u2019s part of Borneo. Between 1990 and 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/mongabay.co.id\/2025\/09\/28\/bagaimana-hutan-indonesia-hilang-18-juta-hektar-dalam-tiga-dekade\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">18 million hectares (45 million acres) of natural forest<\/a>, an area about 60 times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/yose\/learn\/management\/statistics.htm\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">the size of Yosemite National Park in the U.S.<\/a>, disappeared in Indonesia, with peat swamp forests suffering the highest proportional loss rate. During the same period, oil palm plantations and timber concessions expanded dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>Fire is often used as a cheap, albeit risky, method to clear land. But once burning gets out of control and peatlands catch fire, it becomes very difficult to extinguish. The blaze can burn underground undetected for a long time before emerging to the surface.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesian officials and green groups agree that the majority of the fires were deliberately caused, either by individuals or corporations. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kompas.id\/artikel\/karhutla-berulang-serta-kerumitan-birokrasi\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">Investigative journalists<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walhi.or.id\/ribuan-hotspot-di-gambut-hgu-dan-pbph-bukti-negara-gagal-memaksa-korporasi-bertanggung-jawab-atas-karhutla\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">environmental activists<\/a> found that around half of hotspots, including those in Central and West Kalimantan provinces, occurred in industrial concessions.<\/p>\n<h2>Besieged by wildfires<\/h2>\n<p>Surrounded by peatland fires, residents in Indonesia\u2019s Borneo see no end in sight, as air pollution indicators have reached \u201chazardous\u201d levels for weeks in many areas, such as Palangka Raya, the capital of Central Kalimantan. Pontianak, the capital of West Kalimantan province, has topped the list of Indonesia\u2019s most polluted cities since last month.<\/p>\n<p>Pontianak resident Tursih is worried about her children\u2019s health. \u201cMy kids have been coughing and having a cold for several weeks,\u201d she told Mongabay in late August.<\/p>\n<p>She and her family try to limit their outdoor activities, she said. Schools are still closed; we\u2019re learning online,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>A thousand kilometers away, Palangka Raya resident Ilma Naela Anjeli found that a fire was just 200 meters (656 feet) from her home. \u201cWe were worried the blaze would get worse,\u201d said Ima, who lives with her 60-year-old mother and her five-month-old baby. \u201cWe were completely trapped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, firefighters could put out the flames before reaching her house, but the smoke lingered, she said. \u201cWhen the flames began to die down, smoke and ash actually seeped into the house and settled on the surfaces of all our belongings,\u201d she told Mongabay in early September. \u201cThis made us feel short of breath and dizzy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Indonesian health ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/news.detik.com\/berita\/d-8657143\/kemenkes-ungkap-korban-karhutla-di-6-provinsi-4-meninggal-347-luka-luka\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">said<\/a> at least four people have been killed by the wildfires, including three volunteer firefighters in Central Kalimantan. One of them was Akhmad Rizani, the head of a sub-district-level volunteer fire department in Palangka Raya. His colleagues said he collapsed while fighting fires on peatlands on Aug. 27.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after Rizani\u2019s funeral on Aug. 28, his colleagues went on to fight wildfires. In Pontianak, Muhammadiyah, Indonesia\u2019s second-largest Muslim organization, opened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DdIRrXJz8iL\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">Rumah Oksigen<\/a> (Oxygen House), giving free oxygen treatment and dispatching volunteers to deliver oxygen tanks door-to-door to residents and frontline firefighters.<\/p>\n<p>In Palangka Raya, the Central Kalimantan Wildfire Fire Haze Response Coalition (Rakat), consisting of civil society groups and student organizations, runs two safe houses for affected communities. They are equipped with air purifiers, nebulizers, oxygen tanks, infant formula, vitamins, baby diapers and masks.<\/p>\n<p>Adelina Saragih brought her seven-year-old son, who was coughing and wheezing, to a Rakat safe house. He had never coughed so badly, she said. Image by Krismes Santo Haloho\/Mongabay Indonesia.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/nasional.kompas.com\/read\/2026\/09\/10\/18083111\/kemenkes-catat-113336-kasus-ispa-di-7-provinsi-terdampak-karhutla\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">data from the Indonesian health ministry<\/a>, reported by local media, as of Sept. 9, more than 12.5 million people had been affected by wildfires in seven Kalimantan and Sumatra provinces worst-hit by the inferno. It recorded 113,336 acute respiratory tract infection cases in 32 districts in Kalimantan alone.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/energyandcleanair.org\/indonesias-fires-led-to-1700-deaths-in-august-but-regular-air-pollution-even-more\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">report<\/a> released on Sept. 14, the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), a Finland-based think tank, said that air pollution from wildfires led to 1,700 deaths in August, with residents in West, Central and South Kalimantan provinces facing mortality risks three to four times higher than those on Java island.<\/p>\n<p>The number of haze-related deaths may increase, as historical data shows that during El Ni\u00f1o years, wildfires usually peak between late September and November, CREA said. \u201cAugust was only the onset,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p><em>Choo Ching Yee reported from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Oliver Samson from Manila, the Philippines; Irfan Maulana from Jakarta; and Krismes Santo Haloho from Palangka Raya, Indonesia.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Banner image: <\/strong>Haze blankets Pontianak, a city in Indonesia\u2019s West Kalimantan province, on Sept. 3, 2026.
