The sun beats down relentlessly on asphalt and concrete, while tall buildings mercilessly snuff out any hope of a cooling breeze, intensifying <a href=\"https:\/\/india.mongabay.com\/2022\/04\/explainer-what-are-urban-heat-islands\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">urban heat island<\/a> impacts.<\/p>\n<p>Urbanites around the world know the feeling well. And with an increasing number of potentially deadly heat wave days due to a warming climate, it\u2019s only becoming more familiar.<\/p>\n<p>But ask the same city dwellers how they feel when the barometer drops and a soft summer rain breaks the heat. That relief is something a group of researchers hope to artificially replicate using widely distributed rainwater collection tanks and smart rooftop sprinkler systems.<\/p>\n<p>The team, led by Zhonghua Zheng, an associate professor of urban climate and environmental data science at the University of Manchester in the U.K., used machine learning and artificial intelligence to create a new model that can help cities bring down internal temperatures in buildings and even cool outdoors during heat waves. Their proposed system includes a rooftop rainwater collection tank and a sprinkler system that activates at a specific outdoor temperature threshold to water the roof.<\/p>\n<p>Evaporation cools roof temperatures, Zheng explained in a Mongabay interview. \u201cIt has a dual benefit to cool both the indoor temperature and outdoor temperature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The researchers used Tokyo as a case study due to Japan\u2019s temperate climate, seasonal changes, and leadership in rainwater collection. The model found that the strategy would indeed bring down high surface and air temperatures if widely adopted across an urban setting. The team\u2019s findings were <a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1029\/2026EF008876\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">published<\/a> in the journal <em>Earth\u2019s Future<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Moving forward, Zheng said, \u201cwe want to expand [this innovation] to cities all over the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The approach is relatively simple and comparatively economical, using existing rainwater so as not to tax municipal water systems, and offering cooling via well-understood natural principles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople [are] already doing rainwater harvesting.\u201d Zheng said. \u201cSome cities are doing water sprinkling, although I don\u2019t know where the water comes from. That\u2019s because urban heat islands (UHIs) are much hotter than the surrounding countryside \u2014 up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rff.org\/publications\/explainers\/urban-heat-islands-101\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">7\u00b0 Fahrenheit (5\u00b0 Celsius) hotter<\/a> on average in U.S. cities; highly developed urban areas at mid-afternoon can see temperatures\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2022-07-urban-islands-degrees-hotter-city.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">15-20\u00b0F (8-11\u00b0C) higher.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCities have a higher temperature than the natural land,\u201d explained Xuhui Lee, a climate scientist at Yale University in the U.S., who wasn\u2019t involved in the research. That extreme heat is due to \u201clack of evaporation. If you\u2019re in a place with buildings, wind\u2019s cut off. That\u2019s an important part of warming. Another is human [heat] sources,\u201d including air-conditioning, transportation, and industry, Lee added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found [that the rooftop rainwater sprinkler system] can help to lower \u2026 temperatures,\u201d said study co-author Junjie Yu, also from the University of Manchester.<\/p>\n<p>The model found that the systems could lower the number of hours and days in extreme heat wave conditions within certain parameters. The degree of improvement depended on three main variables: Larger tanks meant more water could be used to fight heat. Many people lack air-conditioning, Yu said. Older adults, people with preexisting health conditions, and the urban poor are <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/short-article\/2026\/07\/heat-stress-is-rising-globally-raising-health-concerns-for-billions-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">disproportionately impacted<\/a> by heat. A minimum of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2026\/aug\/25\/at-least-35000-excess-deaths-europe-back-to-back-heatwaves\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">35,000 excess deaths<\/a> were recorded in Europe and thousands more became ill <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/08\/six-things-to-know-about-asias-heatwave-and-the-health-impacts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">in Asia<\/a> during heat waves this summer. In addition, Zheng noted that less electricity used for AC helps bring down greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<p>Another benefit the researchers hope to study is the degree to which widely distributed rainwater collection tanks could decrease urban runoff and flooding due to climate change-intensified downpours. Such extreme precipitation events quickly overwhelm outdated combined sewer outflows, bypassing sewage treatment plants, and allowing raw sewage and other pollutants to flow directly into streams and estuaries in major cities including New York, Paris and London, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2025\/12\/marine-heat-waves-and-raw-sewage-combine-to-put-human-health-at-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">threatening public health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur integrated system can have different co-benefits,\u201d Zheng said, though the researchers put their strongest emphasis on reducing the UHI effect: Cooler outdoor temperatures during heat waves, and better indoor cooling could save lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is kind of a chain,\u201d Zheng added. \u201cBy using the device, we will reduce heat exposure. But he cautioned that rainwater sprinkler systems may not prove to be as helpful in tropical areas, where humidity is already high. \u201cIt\u2019s really dependent on [a city\u2019s] background climate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to adapting the systems for poor rural villages and the suburbs, questions remain: What are the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/08\/urban-heat-islands-have-solutions-many-tropical-cities-cant-afford-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">costs of installation<\/a>? How effective is the system if it\u2019s individually installed on a home or building as opposed to being implemented community-wide?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a local solution,\u201d Lee said. \u201cYou need to bring it into the real world first. Set up a few houses and test it out.
