One of the highest readings <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/short-article\/2026\/08\/global-sea-surface-temperatures-reach-a-record-high-again\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">occurred on Aug<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/short-article\/2026\/08\/global-sea-surface-temperatures-reach-a-record-high-again\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">.<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/short-article\/2026\/08\/global-sea-surface-temperatures-reach-a-record-high-again\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\"> 22<\/a>, when global ocean sea surface temperatures reached 21.10\u00b0 Celsius (69.98\u00b0 Fahrenheit), according to the European Union\u2019s Copernicus Climate Change Service. The Climate Reanalyzer reported temperatures climbing even higher between Aug. 22 and 27, with average ocean sea surface temperatures hitting 21.18\u00b0 C (70.12\u00b0 F). Image courtesy of Climate Central.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In a Sept. 10 press briefing that discussed the Climate Reanalyzer data, Labe said this record ocean heat is part of a long-term trend driven by the human-induced climate crisis. Without a reduction in greenhouse gases, he said the oceans will continue to warm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe driver of this record warmth is climate change,\u201d he said, \u201cand more than 90% of that excess heat from burning fossil fuels and those greenhouse gas emissions goes into the ocean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Experts say the unprecedented ocean heat is affecting marine ecosystems, global weather patterns, and economies that depend on the ocean for food security, livelihoods and coastal protection.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Ocean heat affects ecosystems, economies and health<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The ocean absorbs an exceedingly high amount of heat each year. An analysis published in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s00376-026-5876-0\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\"><em>Advances in Atmospheric Science<\/em><\/a> found that during 2025, the ocean absorbed 23 zettajoules, a quantity of energy equivalent to about 12 <a href=\"https:\/\/thebulletin.org\/2020\/02\/earth-is-heating-at-a-rate-equivalent-to-five-atomic-bombs-per-second-or-two-hurricane-sandys\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">atomic bombs<\/a> exploding in the ocean every second of every day. This was more than a 43% increase from the <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00376-025-4541-3\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">16 zettajoules of heat<\/a> the ocean took in during 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Warming isn\u2019t only affecting the sea surface layer, which extends to a depth of 200 meters (660 feet), but is reaching the deeper layers of the ocean, Labe said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of this has significant impacts,\u201d he said. \u201cIt impacts marine ecosystems. It shifts the geographies of all parts of the marine ecosystem food chain. It also impacts our economy \u2014 things like fisheries, tourism. It also impacts the physical climate system and weather. Bergin collaborates with World Weather Attribution, a team of scientists who evaluate whether extreme weather events are attributable to climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a direct link between increased sea temperatures and the intensity of land-based heat waves,\u201d Bergin said in the press briefing. She said the heat waves Europe experienced over the summer, especially in coastal areas, were \u201cexacerbated\u201d by high sea surface temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>Bergin said high sea temperatures were also linked to an increased <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2020\/05\/dangerous-levels-of-heat-and-humidity-rising-in-frequency-study-says\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">wet bulb temperature<\/a> on land \u2014 that is, the lowest temperature air that can be reached through evaporation, which has implications for humans\u2019 ability to cool themselves. The El Ni\u00f1o is the \u201cwarm\u201d part of the cycle, occurring when Pacific trade winds weaken and warm water accumulates along the west coast of South America, which raises global temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists expect the current El Ni\u00f1o will peak toward the end of 2026 and its force will continue into 2027.<\/p>\n<p>However, the underlying trend of warming sea temperatures in response to climate change remains the primary concern for experts.<\/p>\n<p>In the press briefing, Pickerell, the global director of the ocean program at the U.S.-based nonprofit World Resources Institute, emphasized the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to keep that trend in check. This, he said, is not the responsibility of the individual, but of industry\u2019s \u201cbig emitters\u201d to transition away from oil and gas. Pickerell is also head of the secretariat at the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy, a group of global leaders committed to the protection and sustainable management of the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>The Paris Agreement, signed in 2015, intended to limit global warming to 1.5\u00b0 C above preindustrial levels, a threshold scientists identified as being critical for avoiding the most dangerous impacts of climate change. But according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/limiting-overshoot-navigating-exceedance\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">new report from the U.N.
