{"id":1656,"date":"2026-09-21T15:35:29","date_gmt":"2026-09-21T15:35:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webmediamall.com\/index.php\/2026\/09\/21\/unicorn778-illegal-mines-threaten-biodiversity-and-drinking-water-in-ghanas-atewa-forest-peluang-terburuk-saat-bermain-slot-online\/"},"modified":"2026-09-21T15:35:29","modified_gmt":"2026-09-21T15:35:29","slug":"unicorn778-illegal-mines-threaten-biodiversity-and-drinking-water-in-ghanas-atewa-forest-peluang-terburuk-saat-bermain-slot-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webmediamall.com\/index.php\/2026\/09\/21\/unicorn778-illegal-mines-threaten-biodiversity-and-drinking-water-in-ghanas-atewa-forest-peluang-terburuk-saat-bermain-slot-online\/","title":{"rendered":"UNICORN778 Illegal mines threaten biodiversity and drinking water in Ghana\u2019s Atewa Forest Peluang Terburuk Saat Bermain Slot Online"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"post-330304\">&#13;<\/p>\n<div class=\"bulletpoints-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"bulletpoints\">\n<ul>\n<li><em>Forestry officials charged with protecting the Atewa Forest Reserve in eastern Ghana have been overrun by illegal miners whose operations are putting the water supply of millions of Ghanaians in jeopardy, according to conservation groups.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Atewa is a biodiversity hotspot, with more than 80 threatened and endangered species found in its 26,300 hectares (65,000 acres).<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Environment group A Rocha Ghana and others have called on the government to provide greater resources to counter illegal mining in Atewa and elsewhere.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><button class=\"content-expander\"><span>See All Key Ideas<\/span><\/button><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Every day, scores of illegal miners on motorbikes swarm into the Atewa Forest Reserve, in eastern Ghana \u2014 ignoring the handful of Forestry Commission guards charged with keeping them out.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the reserve, the miners have stripped forest cover and excavated pits, their passage marked by abandoned equipment and temporary camps and muddy and polluted streams. Their actions jeopardize the drinking water of as many as five million Ghanaians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe say this based on a lot of records coming from the Forestry Commission staff, some court records as well,\u201d says Daryl Bosu, deputy national director of operations at conservation initiative A Rocha Ghana, which has been monitoring Atewa and other forested areas for a decade. A Rocha played a key role in a civil society coalition opposing <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2020\/02\/ghanas-government-faces-pushback-in-bid-to-mine-biodiversity-haven-for-bauxite\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">government plans to mine for bauxite in the reserve<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bosu says A Rocha has observed that many of the rivers and streams in the area, which previously ran clear, have turned brown with sediment since the miners overran the reserve. Image \u00a9 John Sullivan via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inaturalist.org\/observations\/15931826\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">iNaturalist<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/4.0\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">CC BY 4.0<\/a>).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Atewa is home to 239 bird species, and an astonishing 711 butterfly species, <a href=\"https:\/\/ghana.arocha.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2015\/07\/Biodiversity-of-Atewa-A-Rocha.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">according to A Rocha<\/a>. \u201cThe forest is noted for having several endangered species such as the dotted border, which is a butterfly [<em>Mylothris atewa<\/em>],\u201d Bosu says. \u201cThe [endangered] white-naped mangabey [<em>Cercocebus lunulatus<\/em>], which has not been seen in the area in recent times, but used to be there, and Shelley\u2019s eagle owl [<em>Bubo shelleyi<\/em>] as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/datazone.birdlife.org\/site\/factsheet\/6312-atewa-range-forest-reserve\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">2022 assessment by BirdLife International<\/a> and the Ghana Wildlife Society, confirmed the reserve is a biodiversity hotspot \u2014 with around 20% of threatened species in Ghana found there. It is the only known home for the critically endangered Afia Birago\u2019s puddle frog (<em>Phrynobatrachus afiabirago<\/em>) and the Atewa slippery frog (<em>Conraua sagyimase<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>In contrast to many other illegal mine sites that have sprung up in other parts of Ghana, Bosu tells Mongabay that the miners presently tearing into the forest here are working with only basic equipment: pickaxes and shovels and \u201cone-leg\u201d machines \u2014 portable versions of the diesel-powered pumps known in Ghana as \u201cchangfan\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>They are nonetheless doing major damage, he says, often operating at night when short-staffed forestry personnel are absent. They also repeated demands that the reserve be listed as a national park, strengthening its protection.<\/p>\n<p>Citing several recent cases, Bosu says he is also concerned that if arrested, the illegal miners are quickly granted bail and return to the forest to continue mining while their cases remain pending \u2014 in at least one case, for five years.<\/p>\n<p>The Forestry Commission and the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat, (NAIMOS) declined to respond to questions from Mongabay. But, in <a href=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/09\/21142538\/STATEMENT-ON-NAIMOS-PLANS-FOR-ATEWA-FOREST-1.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">a Sept. 15 media statement reported by local media<\/a>, NAIMOS spokesperson Paa Kwesi Schandorf, acknowledged that A Rocha and others\u2019 concerns are valid and would receive urgent attention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving already conducted reconnaissance operations within the enclave, NAIMOS is currently collaborating with relevant security and state agencies, to take decisive action within the reserve,\u201d the statement said. \u201cThis next line of intervention will be guided by verified intelligence and further operational assessment to achieve maximum results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Banner image: <\/em><\/strong><em>Illegal miners at work in the Atewa Forest Reserve, Ghana.
