The billionaire-run zoo in India, funded by the philanthropic arm of Reliance Industries, the country\u2019s largest corporation, has been under for fire for questionable acquisitions of its animals.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bornfree.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/NGO_Response_Vantara_26_September_2026.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">open letter<\/a> dated Sep. 22, 2026, and addressed to Mr. Amit Aggarwal, president of regulatory affairs at Vantara, the NGOs offer Vantara \u201csuggestions for strengthening your practices and improving outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter came in response to a <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.vantara.in\/uploads\/Media_Statement_Letter_to_CITES_MA_India_and_Voluntary_Commitments_cfb4a786f5.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">press statement<\/a> from Vantara on Aug. 19, 2026, where it announced \u201cvoluntary commitments\u201d including a 12-month moratorium on all animal imports, backdated to June 5, 2026. It said it has withdrawn all pending import applications and will not make any fresh applications. An inspection by the CITES Secretariat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.himalmag.com\/reliance-ambani-anant-elephants-wildlife-vantara-radhe-krishna-trust-greens\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">flagged irregularities<\/a> in acquisitions, including possible illegal wildlife trade.<\/p>\n<p>Vantara was also investigated by India\u2019s top court, which found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/supreme-court-appointed-sit-gives-clean-chit-to-vantara\/article70051889.ece\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">no evidence of wrongdoing<\/a>. The zoo has denied any of its animals were illegally acquired.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prowildlife.de\/aktuelles\/pressemitteilung\/ngos-fordern-vantara-muss-wildtier-importe-dauerhaft-beenden\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">press release<\/a> announcing the letter, the German NGO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prowildlife.de\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">Pro Wildlife<\/a>, one of the letter\u2019s signatories, called Vantara\u2019s import of some 60,000 live wild animals \u2014 from more than 2,000 species \u2014 \u201cunprecedented.\u201d They include some of the world\u2019s most endangered and iconic species: Spix\u2019s macaws (<em>Cyanopsitta spixii<\/em>), which are extinct in the wild; critically endangered Tapanuli orangutans (<em>Pongo tapanuliensis<\/em>); and Galapagos iguanas that have <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2025\/07\/suspicions-surround-international-legal-trade-in-galapagos-iguanas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">never been legally exported<\/a> from the archipelago.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Moratorium welcome, but make it permanent, NGOs say<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In their letter, the NGOs say they \u201cwelcome\u201d Vantara\u2019s announced changes in its process, but note it isn\u2019t enough. So while we broadly welcome the significant change of approach detailed in Vantara\u2019s letter of 19th August, and Vantara\u2019s decision to engage experienced and reputable advisors to provide oversight and governance, rebuilding trust will require them to make good on their promises, and indeed to go further, in order to demonstrate their commitment to deliver high quality rescue and care of wild animals in desperate need, by supporting true sanctuaries in the animals\u2019 countries of origin, effective suppression of the ravages of the wildlife trade, and wildlife law enforcement,\u201d said Will Travers OBE, executive president of U.K.-based NGO Born Free, which is also a signatory.<\/p>\n<p>The NGOs say that Vantara\u2019s \u201cexemptions\u201d in its moratorium, which includes future imports of animals from captive-bred facilities, could still enable illegal wildlife trade. These animals could be presented as \u201ccaptive-bred\u201d but come from the wild or could include animals bred from parents that were illegally captured, a \u201claundering\u201d practice <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2025\/03\/regulation-loopholes-fuel-illegal-wildlife-trade-from-latin-america-to-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">prevalent in wildlife trade<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The letter also notes that a one-year temporary moratorium (which ends in 10 months, as it\u2019s retrospective) \u201crisks creating further demand, leading to the stockpiling of animals by wildlife traders and traffickers in anticipation of its expiration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead, they say Vantara must extend its temporary ban into \u201ca permanent end to the import of wild animals, subject only to extremely limited and exceptional exemptions based on clearly defined criteria.\u201d Any exception, they say, must be limited to independently verified conservation or welfare emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>The NGOs also call for a stricter definition of what constitutes a \u201crescue,\u201d which includes not paying for animals directly or \u201cindirectly through donors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vantara said in its letter that it has accepted some animals \u201cbought by donors and then gifted or donated to Vantara\u201d for these animals \u201cto have a better life,\u201d removing them \u201cfrom crowded private facilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NGOs say such practice \u201ccreates financial incentives for commercial breeders to mislabel their exports to justify such transactions\u201d and enables illegal wildlife trade.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_330872\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/09\/25130724\/LHoests_monkey_Cercopithecus_lhoesti-2.jpg\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-330872\" src=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/09\/25130724\/LHoests_monkey_Cercopithecus_lhoesti-2.jpg\" alt=\"L'Hoest's monkeys are endemic to the Congo Basin in Africa. The zoo says that every animal acquisition will be vetted by its due diligence committee, advisory body and the governing council.<\/p>\n<p>The NGOs say Vantara must also \u201cprovide a public inventory of the animals held at Vantara\u2019s facilities,\u201d including \u201crecords of transfers to other facilities, births and deaths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They also called for transparency on the mandate on Vantara\u2019s governing council, advisory board and due diligence committee, saying members \u201cshould disclose financial, familial, professional, and political relationships that could create actual or perceived conflicts of interest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are concerns about conflict of interest. On Aug. 13, 2026, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elephantprotectioninitiative.org\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">Elephant Protection Initiative<\/a> Foundation (EPI), an Africa-focused NGO that deals with human-elephant conflicts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/28683099-epi-email-on-vantara-donations\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">said in an email<\/a> obtained by Mongabay that it \u201chas received a generous grant from Vantara\u201d to support its work. Scanlon, who heads Vantara\u2019s governing council, is the CEO of that organization. His appointment to that position was made public after the email, although Vantara first approached him in April, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.vantara.in\/uploads\/FINAL_PR_VANTARA_APPOINTS_JOHN_SCANLON_AS_CHAIR_GC_7e0e309f99.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">press release by the zoo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So far, Vantara says it has brought animals to its facilities as part of rescue and rehabilitation. He\u2019s the youngest son of billionaire Mukesh Ambani, chairman of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ril.com\/about\/chairman-managing-director\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">Reliance Industries<\/a>; the zoo is funded through the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reliancefoundation.org\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This zoo is not open to the public and is essentially a private collection. There are questions about why hundreds of thousands of animals, some rare and endangered, have been collected there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been deeply concerning over the past two years to see dozens of great apes and thousands of monkeys sent to Vantara under the guise of rescue, with dubious origins and legality. Vantara\u2019s stated commitments are a welcome shift, but they must be strengthened and translated into meaningful action,\u201d said Iris Ho, head of campaigns and policy at the NGO Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA), also a signatory to the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA genuine reset should be demonstrated by Vantara dedicating significant resources\u2014with the same rigor it once applied to animal acquisitions\u2014to supporting frontline conservation organizations and range-state based rescue centers, most of which are chronically underfunded and stretched thin, yet never give up protecting and caring for animals, both in their centers and in the wild,\u201d Ho said.<\/p>\n<p>The NGO letter also calls for full protection for civil society, including journalists, NGOs and whistleblowers, so they can \u201craise issues and provide recommendations in good faith, without facing legal or institutional pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the past, journalists and media outlets from India, Brazil, Germany, Africa and the Czech Republic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewsminute.com\/news\/bogus-law-firm-and-fake-google-notices-the-murky-online-campaign-to-suppress-stories-on-vantara-zoo\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">reportedly received<\/a> fake legal notices and copyright claims for publishing stories critical of Vantara, seemingly to suppress coverage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a time when wildlife trade interests are often well-financed and well-connected, and when legal and regulatory measures are underfunded and can be too slow to adequately enforce measures to protect species from the impact of escalating trade pressure, institutions with substantial resources and influence should support efforts to protect wildlife in its natural habitats, rather than incentivise further exploitation,\u201d the letter says.<\/p>\n<p>The letter comes ahead of the 81st CITES Standing Committee meeting, set to take place in early November, where the Indian government is expected to respond to the CITES Secretariat\u2019s report that raised concerns about Vantara\u2019s imports after its representatives visited Vantara in September 2025.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Banner image:<\/strong> Vantara was founded by Anant Ambani, the son of one of India\u2019s richest men, Mukesh Ambani.
