The \u201csuper\u201d El Ni\u00f1o, which officially arrived in June, is <a href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/news\/media-centre\/strong-el-nino-expected-intensify\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">expected<\/a> to intensify over the rest of the year, bringing prolonged warmer weather, droughts and adverse health risks to people in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you need to know about the extreme weather:<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How hot has it been in Asia?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Very hot. On Aug. 2, the mercury in Yangsan, a city in South Korea, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=1719359949112772\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">hit<\/a> 42.5\u00b0 Celsius (108.5\u00b0 Fahrenheit), the highest mark since official records began in 1904. Parts of South Korea got so hot that potatoes were <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sbs.co.kr\/news\/endPage.do?news_id=N1008693940&amp;plink=ORI&amp;cooper=NAVER\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">literally \u201cboiled<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sbs.co.kr\/news\/endPage.do?news_id=N1008693940&amp;plink=ORI&amp;cooper=NAVER\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">,<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sbs.co.kr\/news\/endPage.do?news_id=N1008693940&amp;plink=ORI&amp;cooper=NAVER\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">\u201d<\/a> while still in the ground.<\/p>\n<p>In late July, temperatures exceeded 40\u00b0C (104\u00b0F) in several prefectures in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.data.jma.go.jp\/stats\/etrn\/view\/rankall.php\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">Japan<\/a>, as well as in central and western regions of <a href=\"https:\/\/news.weather.com.cn\/2026\/07\/4726078.shtml\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">China<\/a>. On Aug. 9, the Hong Kong Observatory <a href=\"https:\/\/news.rthk.hk\/rthk\/en\/component\/k2\/1865548-20260809.htm\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">logged<\/a> 39.8\u00b0C (103\u00b0F), the city\u2019s highest reading since it introduced automatic weather stations in the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>Southeast Asia also reported weather anomalies. Vietnamese officials <a href=\"https:\/\/nchmf.gov.vn\/kttvsite\/vi-VN\/1\/ban-tin-du-bao-khi-hau-thoi-han-thang-tren-pham-vi-toan-quoc-thoi-ky-tu-11-7-10-8-2026-post53490.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">said<\/a> thermal readings from July 11 to Aug. 10 showed the mercury at 39-40\u00b0C (102-104\u00b0F), \u201cexceeding records\u201d in many parts of the country. Image by AP Photo\/Lee Jin-man.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>What exactly is El Ni\u00f1o\u2019s role?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While El Ni\u00f1o is a naturally occurring phenomenon, human-made climate change can intensify its impacts, further pushing record-breaking temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>Under normal conditions, strong trade winds push warm surface water to the western Pacific Ocean, providing fuel for Asia\u2019s summer monsoons, said Justin Sentian, professor of atmospheric science at Universiti Malaysia Sabah.<\/p>\n<p>However, El Ni\u00f1o weakens the winds, preventing the warm water in the east from flowing west.<\/p>\n<p>This \u201cleft Southeast Asia and East Asia trapped beneath a heavy, descending mass of high-pressure air,\u201d the scientist told Mongabay via email.<\/p>\n<p>The sinking air then blocked summer storms from forming and left the region without the protective cover from monsoon clouds that reflect sunlight, causing \u201cunmitigated solar energy\u201d to directly strike the Earth\u2019s surface in Asia, he said.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What have been the health impacts?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Heatstroke, the most well-known risk during a heatwave, has \u201ca <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/vietnam\/news\/fact-sheets\/detail\/climate-change-heat-and-health\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">high-case fatality rate<\/a>,\u201d according to the World Health Organization (WHO).<\/p>\n<p>In South Korea, as of Aug. 18, there had been 3,445 heat-related illness cases and 31 deaths, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mois.go.kr\/synap\/skin\/doc.html?fn=BBS_2026081811214176721&amp;rs=\/synapFile\/202608\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">according<\/a> to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. More than 80% of those who died were 60 or older, the Disease Control and Prevention Agency <a href=\"https:\/\/kdca.go.kr\/kdca\/2848\/subview.do?enc=Zm5jdDF8QEB8JTJGYmJzJTJGa2RjYSUyRjQyJTJGMzEyMTExJTJGYXJ0Y2xWaWV3LmRvJTNGcGFzc3dvcmQlM0QlMjZyZ3NCZ25kZVN0ciUzRCUyNmZpbmRPcG53cmQlM0QlMjZmaW5kV29yZCUzRCUyNnJnc0VuZGRlU3RyJTNEJTI2ZmluZFR5cGUlM0QlMjZmaW5kQ2xTZXElM0QlMjZwYWdlJTNEMiUyNg%3D%3D\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Japanese authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jiji.com\/jc\/article?k=2026072200925&amp;g=soc\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">said<\/a> on July 22 that within a week, 14 people died due to suspected heatstroke, and over 10,800 people were hospitalized after showing heatstroke symptoms. Fiji rugby player Saimoni Vunilagi, 26, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kyudenvoltex.com\/news\/1001\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">collapsed<\/a> on Aug. 3 after a training session in Fukuoka with signs of heatstroke, according to media reports. He died four days later.<\/p>\n<p>High temperatures can also be fatal to animals. Three lions at a Tokyo zoo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tokyo-zoo.net\/tama\/news\/12513\/index.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">died<\/a> of suspected heatstroke. Image courtesy of Pablo Cabrera\/CDC.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to a 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-025-63655-0#Sec2\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">study<\/a> published in <em>Nature Communications<\/em>, El Ni\u00f1o may cause a 39% to 81.7% increase in cumulative dengue cases around the world between 2020 and 2099.<\/p>\n<p>There are also concerns about respiratory illnesses as an El Ni\u00f1o-induced drought fuels widespread wildfires across Indonesia, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/08\/indonesias-wildfire-season-surges-as-haze-spreads-into-malaysia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">sending haze<\/a> into nearby communities and across the border into Malaysia and potentially Singapore.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Are heatwaves here to stay?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Unfortunately, yes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeadly heatwaves are almost certain to be more frequent as Earth becomes warmer,\u201d Yi Ming, a climate scientist at Boston College in the U.S., told Mongabay.<\/p>\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o events will make the situation worse, he said, warning that this year\u2019s El Ni\u00f1o will reach its peak strength in the fall and winter.<\/p>\n<p>Bin Wang, an emeritus professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in the U.S., said that while Southeast Asia is likely to be drier, southern China, western Japan and the southern tip of the Korean Peninsula tend to receive more rainfall in El Ni\u00f1o years.<\/p>\n<p>Geoje, on the southern coast of South Korea, was hit with more than 950 millimeters (37 inches) of rain from Aug. 15 to Aug. 17 \u2014 an amount equal to two-thirds of last year\u2019s entire precipitation that fell on the city.<\/p>\n<p>East Asia may have more precipitation next year, Wang said. \u201cIt is very likely that the summer following a very strong El Ni\u00f1o \u2014 for instance, the summer of 2027 \u2014 the <em>meiyu<\/em> in China, <em>baiu<\/em> in Japan, and <em>changma<\/em> in Korea will be excessively strong,\u201d he said, using the words that mean monsoon in each language.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What can be done to alleviate the heatwave impacts?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Some cities have turned to nature to mitigate the effects of the climate crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Seoul <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230206232839\/https:\/news.seoul.go.kr\/env\/square\/tree_planting_project\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">planted<\/a> more than 30 million trees between 2014 and 2021 under an ambitious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.koreaherald.com\/article\/1955282\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">project<\/a> to fight the urban heat island and air pollution. Roadside trees in the South Korean capital can lower temperatures by up to 1.09\u00b0C (1.96\u00b0F), according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.re.kr\/bbs\/view.do?key=2024100039&amp;pstSn=2505130001\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">study<\/a> by the Seoul Institute, a municipal government think tank.<\/p>\n<p>In the early 2000s, Seoul removed a highway and restored Cheonggyecheon, a stream that had been covered with concrete. The project was <a href=\"https:\/\/wedocs.unep.org\/items\/850d68f1-7c77-4c44-82f0-56030074c31d\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">credited<\/a> with not only reducing temperatures by up to 5.9\u00b0C (10.6\u00b0F) but also slashing air pollution and enhancing biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore has adopted <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/short-article\/2025\/08\/how-urban-greening-is-helping-singapore-bounce-back-from-widespread-forest-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">urban planning methods<\/a> that aim to maximize wind flow, shade space and urban greenery.
