But in 2017, scientists described the Tapanuli orangutan (<em>Pongo tapanuliensis<\/em>) as a third, distinct species, also found in northern Sumatra. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Here are the major orangutan developments over the past year:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span>Whirlwind year for Tapanuli orangutans<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span>In September 2025, researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2025\/10\/tapanuli-orangutan-sumatra-endangered-ape-conservation-forest-indonesia\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">confirmed<\/a> a previously unknown Tapanuli population in a peat swamp forest in the Lumut Maju village forest in North Sumatra. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Scientists previously believed the species, estimated at <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/07\/major-orangutan-study-finds-sumatran-population-fell-nearly-20-despite-slower-forest-loss\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">716 wild individuals<\/a>, lived only in Batang Toru, about 32 kilometers (20 miles) east of the new population.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_326716\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-326716\" src=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/08\/19202130\/Tapanuli-Orangutan-Pongo-tapanuliensis-by-Safira-Arda.jpeg\" alt=\"A Tapanuli orangutan. Image \u00a9 Bert Harris via iNaturalist (CC BY-NC 4.0).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span>Two months later, Cyclone Senyar triggered tens of thousands of landslides in Batang Toru and killed an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/06\/climate-fueled-landslides-killed-an-estimated-58-tapanuli-orangutans-study-finds\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">58 Tapanuli orangutans<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/07\/small-scale-farming-logging-eclipse-megaprojects-as-top-threats-to-tapanuli-orangutan-habitat\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Habitat destruction<\/a> for small-scale agriculture and logging accounts for around 70% of direct forest loss. Large-scale industrial projects, including the Batang Toru hydropower plant and the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2024\/03\/indonesian-gold-mine-expanding-in-wrong-direction-into-orangutan-habitat\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Martabe gold mine<\/a>, are also encroaching into the orangutans\u2019 range. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span>Newborn Sumatran orangutan\u2019s mother saved from trafficking<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span>In July 2026, a formerly trafficked Sumatran orangutan named Bulan <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/08\/rescued-from-traffickers-reintroduced-orangutan-becomes-mother-in-the-wild\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">gave birth<\/a> in the wild seven years after being reintroduced. Image courtest of Andi Saputra\/YEL-SOCP.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span>\u201cThis birth demonstrates how orangutans, once victims of the wildlife trade, can be given a second chance to live and reproduce in the wild,\u201d Ujang Wisnu Barata, head of the Aceh provincial conservation agency, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/08\/rescued-from-traffickers-reintroduced-orangutan-becomes-mother-in-the-wild\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">told<\/a> Mongabay contributor Ayat S. Karokaro. \u201cSuccesses like this can only continue if their habitat remains protected.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Female orangutans breed only once every <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldanimalprotection.org\/our-campaigns\/sentience\/animal-awareness-days\/world-orangutan-day\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">seven or eight<\/a> years, the longest interval between births of any mammal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Despite conservation successes, a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/07\/major-orangutan-study-finds-sumatran-population-fell-nearly-20-despite-slower-forest-loss\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">2026 orangutan population assessment<\/a> estimated the Sumatran population fell 19.5% between 2011 and 2023. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span>Bornean orangutans face pressure from palm oil and fire<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span>Bornean orangutan habitats faced significant losses from palm oil expansion and fires over the last year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A palm oil company <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/03\/palm-oil-clearing-advances-in-bornean-orangutan-habitat-despite-red-flags\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">cleared<\/a> more than 3,000 hectares (7,400 acres) of forest in a UNESCO biosphere reserve, Mongabay <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/03\/palm-oil-clearing-advances-in-bornean-orangutan-habitat-despite-red-flags\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">reported<\/a> in March.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_326717\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-326717\" src=\"https:\/\/imgs.mongabay.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/08\/19202252\/Southwest-Bornean-Orangutan-Pongo-pygmaeus-ssp.-wurmbii.-Image-%C2%A9-miguelviegas-via-iNaturalist-CC-BY-NC-4.0.jpg\" alt=\"Southwest Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus ssp. wurmbii). Image \u00a9 miguelviegas via iNaturalist (CC BY-NC 4.0)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span>In May, fires <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/05\/conservationists-fear-fires-could-erase-years-of-orangutan-habitat-recovery\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">consumed<\/a> more than half of a 300-hectare (740-acre) orangutan habitat restoration effort in Indonesia\u2019s West Kalimantan province. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Another fire <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/08\/flames-reach-edge-of-orangutan-rehabilitation-center-with-fire-season-set-to-intensify\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">hit the edge<\/a> of an orangutan rehabilitation center in August, which raises concerns about further fires in the coming months as El Ni\u00f1o is expected to exacerbate drought in the region. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span>Banner image: <\/span><\/em><\/strong><em><span>Sumatran orangutan.
