Even small temperature increases represent a huge gain in heat energy in the ocean because of its vast volume, noted the 2025 European state of the climate <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.copernicus.eu\/esotc\/2025\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">report<\/a>. In 2025, too, the global ocean heat content \u2014 that is, the total amount of heat stored in the ocean \u2014 reached a new record high, passing the previous record set in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The increase in ocean warming is having far-reaching consequences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur [latest] report highlights how sea surface temperatures contribute to sea-level rise, increase the likelihood and intensity of marine heatwaves, put critical ecosystems such as coral reefs and seagrass under greater stress, and threaten fisheries and food security,\u201d Samantha Burgess told Mongabay in an email.<\/p>\n<p>Burgess is the strategic lead for climate with the C3S at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, which produced the report. She added that increased sea surface temperatures \u201ccan also increase the potential for some extreme weather events, putting coastal communities at risk, all the while reducing the ocean\u2019s ability to act as a carbon sink for the planet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The world\u2019s oceans have absorbed more than <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2019\/09\/ipcc-special-report-finds-oceans-and-cryosphere-changing-rapidly-due-to-global-warming\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">90%<\/a> of the excess heat produced by human activities since the 1980s, and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/short-article\/2024\/10\/rate-of-ocean-warming-has-nearly-doubled-in-the-last-two-decades-report\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">the rate of warming<\/a> has nearly doubled in the past two decades. The last four years have been the hottest on record for global ocean sea surface temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number of marine heatwave days globally has more than tripled since the early 1990s,\u201d Burgess said.<\/p>\n<p>Adding fuel to the fire of human-induced warming is a super El-Ni\u00f1o currently strengthening in the tropical Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEl Ni\u00f1o is adding heat to the system, but it is doing so on top of decades of human-driven warming,\u201d Burgess said.<\/p>\n<p>Globally, scientists are concerned about massive marine deaths from extreme ocean heat. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2021\/09\/with-coral-cover-halved-curbing-climate-change-is-only-way-to-slow-the-loss\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Coral reefs<\/a> are particularly sensitive to heat and a coral die-off could have cascading effects for the roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/topics\/ocean-seas-and-coasts\/blue-ecosystems\/coral-reefs\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">25%<\/a> of all marine life that depends on them as a habitat.<\/p>\n<p>Coastal communities are also at greater risk as warmer oceans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/warming-oceans-are-hurting-seafood-supply-and-things-are-getting-worse\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">damage fish stocks<\/a>, create conditions for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2025\/12\/251225080725.htm\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external\">stronger tropical storms<\/a> and increase sea level rise as a result of melting glaciers and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2024\/01\/ocean-heating-breaks-record-again-with-disastrous-outcomes-for-the-planet\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">thermal expansion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Oceans are an enormous buffer for the climate system, Burgess told Mongabay. However, warmer oceans can mean significant changes to ocean circulation patterns and marine life and make the ocean less effective at absorbing excess carbon from human activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn other words, the buffering service continues, but at increasing cost to ecosystems and society,\u201d Burgess said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Banner image:<\/em><\/strong><em> The ocean is a crucial player in the global carbon cycle.
